Africanus Aveh has since August 2010 been the Head, Department of Theatre Arts, School of Performing Arts. Appointed a Lecturer in October 1995, Africanus was promoted a Senior Lecturer in 2006. He is a specialist in Radio, Film, Television and Video Studies and has supervised numerous student academic essays, projects and creative videos. He was also a Tutor, Norwegian Language & Society - NORAD Fellowship Programme, University of Trondheim, Norway. (1992-1994). He speaks English, Norwegian, Swedish, French and many local Ghanaian languages.

Research Activities & Interests:
1) The socio-cultural impact of locally produced feature videos on the people of Ghana. [on-going]
[This research project involves the viewing of over 500 Ghanaian videos, analyzing them and conducting interviews with both filmmakers and viewers. A multi-volume video directory will soon be published.]
2) Television in Ghana: achievements and prospects in the face of emerging private television broadcasting. [on-going]
[This research is assessing the impact of private broadcasting on the Ghanaian media landscape.]
3) Documentary film representation and the issue of cultural preservation. [on-going]
[This research examines to what extent documentary films affect the preservation of culture.]
4) Film policies in Ghana and the development of the industry. [on-going]
[This is a study of national policies that regulate the film and video industry. It has produced papers for seminars and conferences.]
5) Docudrama and effectiveness of raising public awareness. [on-going]
[This is a project on the effective use of docudrama in public education. It has contributed to some productions that I have done]
6) New experiments in video production within emerging technology. [on-going]
[This is a project in experimenting with new technologies in video production. It has resulted in some productions that I was involved]
7) Representation, Ideology, Authenticity & the Image. [on-going]
[This is a major part of my doctoral research in ideology as a catalyst in style of production which raises questions of representation and authenticity of images and sound on our screens.]
8) Documenting African Experience on Slavery through Film & Video. [on-going]
[This project, undertaking with the support of CODESRIA African Humanities Institute Programme, is an attempt to document on video the African slave experience both past and present. It involves field trips to sites in West Africa where slavery relics, monuments and artifacts still abound and filming them. Major sites visited include Goree Island in Senegal, Abomey, Porto Novo & Ouidah in Benin, and sites in Northern Ghana as well as castles and forts along the coast of Ghana. Post-production work is in progress to produce video documentaries and educational DVD-ROMs for teaching and presentations.]
9) Documenting Ghanaian Artistic Expressions on Video [on-going]
[This project aims at documenting Ghanaian artistic works (dance, music, drama) on video for use as teaching material as well as preservation. The project has produced videos of several major artistic creations and performances]
10) The Mass Media and the Ghanaian Society [on-going]
[This research involves an examination of the mass media especially newer ones like the Internet and its effect on the Ghanaians.]
11) Children and Television in Ghana. [on-going]
[An assessment of children programmes on Ghanaian television and its impact on the development of the Ghanaian child. Develop culturally appropriate television productions for Ghanaian children.]
12) Theatrical Hybrid: Video clips as part of live stage drama. [on-going]
[An experimental project in the creation of a mixed media production involving live stage drama and video projection in an attempt to increase dramatic realism on stage in order to increase interest in theatre in Ghana. This project has produced a major performance entitled “Cosmic High Court” and a conference paper – “Screening the Stage: New Dimensions in Theatrical Production”.]
13) National Identification System [completed]
[Intensive commissioned study and research into the proposed National Identification System for Ghana leading to writing, directing and producing short video features and a multi-language radio drama for public education]
14) HIV/AIDS Educational Campaign. [on-going]
[Study and research into the HIV/AIDS situation in Ghana. Wrote and directed a short video feature for the National AIDS Commission and an interactive stage drama for Bank of Ghana for public education on HIV/AIDS. A television serial is currently been developed for production.]
15) Nollywood and the Ghanaian Film Industry [on-going]
[Study of the Nigerian video film production and distribution in Ghana and its effects on the Ghanaian film industry. Papers have been delivered at major conferences and some journal publications are forthcoming]
