Projects & Programmes

The SRC embarks on various programmes and projects each academic year. Some of these projects and programmes are constant with various changes to suite the students’ interest.

The SRC week celebration and the Women’s Commission week celebration are constant programmes organized by the union each year. The entertainment committee and other committees also organize programmes as and when it deems it prudent.
Presently, the SRC has two major projects that it needs funds for.

These are; The SRC Hostel Project and the SRC Bus Fund. We appeal to all those who can help in one way or another to forward their help be it in kind or cash to the Council.

Approved projects and programmes to be embarked on this year will be soon published for your consumption.

THE SRC HOSTEL COMPLEX

HISTORY
University of Ghana was built over a half century ago for the purpose of providing for and promoting university education, learning and research. This was carried out with little difficulty until the introduction of a educational reform which saw a lot more people qualifying to enter universities.

The new educational reform programme created a situation where admission of students into the University of Ghana, for instance, increased without any major expansion in the facilities and infrastructure for both academic and residential purposes.

Some statistics on student intake indicates an over nine times increase in enrolment figures. The following are the figures as at the year the reform was introduced as compared to current number of students enrolled.
1987 -3,000
Present -27,917
However the only major accommodation facilities introduced were the Jubilee hall, which was constructed about a decade ago when the university celebrated its golden jubilee.

Very recently, a three storey hostel was built around Akuafo annexes and the Valco Hostel also saw another phase completed. All these are insignificant considering the growing population with the University offering only about thirty percent of students’ accommodation

OBJECTIVES OF THE HOSTEL COMPLEX PROJECT
The Hostel Project derives its basis from the university strategic plan and the university’s policy of reducing and re-enforcing residential accommodation development.

The objectives and the basis of this project among others are:
1. To provide a convenient ultra modern residential accommodation for students.
2. To provide relevant, accessible and affordable residence to the students.
3. To ensure decongestion in the existing residential facility.
4. To demonstrate the SRC’s willingness to contribute to the development of the university.

FUNDING
Funds are mobilized from a special levy which ensured the contribution of an amount per student every academic year towards its execution. In addition, various corporate organizations and individuals are contributing both in cash and kind.
