About the Students Representative Council(SRC)

The Students Representative Council (SRC) represents the entire mouthpiece of the entire student body here in the University. It provides a means of communication between students and the university authorities in all matters affecting the university body. It fosters good relationship between students of this university and the outside world and further seeks the interest and welfare of the student body of the university and Ghana as a whole.

The Structure of the SRC

The SRC is composed of:

THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY

The highest decision making body of the SRC and all issues concerning students are discussed here. The General Assembly has representations from the halls and faculties; it takes decisions for the running of the students’ leadership.

THE EXECUTIVE COMMITTEE
This consists of the JCR Presidents, Executive officers, Vice Secretary, Womens’ Commissioner, GRASAG President, President of the Medical Students Association and the Legal Advisor. They assist and counsel the Executive Officers in the performance of their duties and see to the implementation of the decisions of the General Assembly.

THE JUDICIAL BOARD

It comprises of the Judicial Committee Chairpersons of the JCR’s in the University. Its functions include the enforcement and interpretation of the constitution. It also has jurisdiction in matters relating to elections, impeachment proceedings and disputes amongst JCRS in the University.

THE EXECUTIVE OFFICERS
The executive officers are elected by the general student body dent officers is the President, Vice President, Secretary and Treasurer.
The current executive officers are:

The general student body, to wit, all persons in “status papillary” of the University of Ghana.

COMMITTEES AND COMMISSIONS OF THE SRC
The SRC has some standing committees that allows for the efficient functioning. These committees include;

THE FINANCE COMMITTEE
It pre-audits and takes charge of all financial transactions of the Executive Officers, commissions and committees of the SRC.

THE AUDIT BOARD

It audits the accounts of the SRC and all committees, commissions and institutions established under the constitution.

THE ENTERTAINMENT COMMITTEE
It oversees the organization of all SRC entertainment activities on campus including the SRC WEEK CELEBRATION.

THE EXTERNAL AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
It is responsible for the organization of student travels outside Ghana and other external affairs of the SRC. This committee is also expected to coordinate the activities at level of bigger student unions such as University Students Association of Ghana (USAG) of SRC with NUGS and other organizations.

THE PUBLICATIONS AND INFORMATION COMMITTEE

It ensures the efficient and effective running of Radio Univers, publishes the SRC magazine and publicity of all SRC activities including the SRC week.

THE WELFARE COMMITTEE
It ensures the welfare of the members of the General Assembly and members at large and determines the honorarium to be given to Executive Officers and all other members who stay during vacation to execute SRC activities.

THE PROJECTS AND PROGRAMMES COMMITTEE
It has the responsibility for taking charge of all assets of the SRC, taking proper and true records of all assets of the SRC and implementing major projects or programmes of the SRC.

THE INTELLIGENCE AND STUDENTS AFFAIRS COMMITTEE
It researches and collates data as well as other information on issues affecting the welfare of all students. It also analyzes information on various issues of national interest for purposes of contributing to debate and discussions on issues of national importance.

THE ARBITRATION COMMITTEE
It comprises of religious and denominational heads of students in the university. It advises the Executive Committee periodically on issues affecting students. It also facilitates the resolution of conflict between and among students, JCR, SRC and the Administration of the University. It also gives spiritual direction to the SRC as a whole.

THE DISCIPLINARY COMMITTEE
It deals with all acts of indiscipline on the part of any member of the General Assembly or students and has the power to prescribe any appropriate punishment capable of being enforced by the General Assembly.

Other internal structures of the SRC include;

THE ELECTORAL COMMISSION
The electoral commission is responsible for conducting and supervising all SRC elections including the election of Hall Representatives of the General Assembly and NUGS elections in the year in which the university shall host the national secretariat of NUGS.

THE WOMENS’ COMMISSION
This includes every female student in the university. It aids female students to realize their importance in our community thereby encouraging them to contribute towards the advancement of society. It seeks to empower and assists females in finding solutions to problems relating to women ideals, help to prepare the female student for a more responsible and responsive role in life after school amongst others.

THE FOREIGN STUDENTS ASSOCIATION
It assists in finding solutions to problems faced by foreign students in the university, seeks their welfare and ensure that the interest of international students is protected. It allows foreign students to appreciate their importance making it relevant for them to contribute to the advancement of the SRC.
The Association also inculcates in foreign students a solidarity spirit as well as encouraging them to actively participate in campus programmes and activities.

JUNIOR COMMON ROOM (JCR)
This represents the Junior members of the Traditional Halls of residence of the University. There is a leadership that steers the affairs of the Junior members. The Presidents of the JCRs are members of the Executive Committee of the SRC ,they form part of the highest decision making bodies in the Traditional Halls of residence that is the Hall Councils. They also serve on the Residence Board of the University and take part in decisions concerning residence in the University.
Every student in status papillary and attached to the Hall is a member.
Every J.C.R. has its own constitution. It elects its governing body of officers who seek to protect the interests of Junior Members of the Hall and provides cultural, social and sporting activities for the Hall. The J.C.R. of a Hall, through its officers, maintains relations with JCRs. of other Halls and is a recognized channel of communication between Junior Members and the Hall authorities. The revenue of the JCR is derived from students' contributions and contributions from the University through the Hall Council.
