Since joining the University of Ghana faculty in 2006, he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses and supervised undergraduate research projects and postgraduate dissertations/theses. Additionally, he has served as an external supervisor and assessor for post-graduate dissertations and theses in Ghana and abroad. His research focuses on children and young people in out-of-home care. His research focuses on children and adolescents in residential and foster care, as well as young people leaving care or transitioning to adulthood. He also researches child-care reform in Africa and the Global South. Kwabena has conducted cross-country research in South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, and Uganda, in addition to Ghana. Over 30 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters have been published by Kwabena. He has published articles in leading social work journals such as Children and Youth Services Review, Children and Society, Child and Family Social Work, Child Adolescent Social Work, and Emerging Adulthood. In the past, he has presented papers at international conferences. Kwabena is a member of the Editorial Board of Children and Youth Services Review. He has received international competitive research grants (both as PI and CO-I). He is a registered social worker with the Health and Social Care Council, UK, a member of the International Research Network on Transitions to Adulthood from Care (INTRAC), and a founding member of the Africa Network of Care Leaving Researchers (ANCR). Kwabena has previously served on a number of university Boards and Committees, including the Examiners and Academic Board. He is currently a Senior Research Associate in the Department of Social Work at the University of Johannesburg. He has also been a guest lecturer at the University of Malmo and Jönköping University.
