Brief History

Under the collegiate system, the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology handles all pharmacology and toxicology courses to students in the following schools:

  1. School of Pharmacy
  2. School of Medicine and Dentistry (Graduate Entry Medical Students)
  3. School of Public Health
  4. School of Nursing
  5. School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences
  6. School of Veterinary Medicine

PROGRAMMES

  • Undergraduate Teaching/projects

Apart from undergraduate teaching, lecturers of the department supervise undergraduate research projects.

  • Postgraduate Training

The department runs an MPhil post graduate programme in Pharmacology. Department will soon mount a PhD programme in Pharmacology and Toxicology.

  • Departmental Monthly Seminars

The department organizes a monthly departmental seminar to give updates on staff research activities.

DEPARTMENTAL RESEARCH AREAS

  • Antimicrobial residues in food of animal origin
  • Clinical Pharmacology and Population Pharmacokinetics
  • Natural products pharmacology and toxicology
  • Anticancer drug discovery studies from medicinal plant preparations
  • Safety assessment:  Cytotoxicity; mutagenicity, hepatotoxicity, nephrotoxicity; haematotoxicty of medicinal plants
  • Therapeutic potentials of plant-based remedies for managing diabetes mellitus, epilepsy, depression and other neuropsychiatric/psychotic disorders including their cellular and molecular mechanisms.

RESEARCH OUTPUT AND PUBLICATIONS
Staff and students of the department are active in research and have translated their research into quality scientific papers published in reputable peer-reviewed journals. See recent publications listed under individual academic staff of the department.
