Brief History

The current Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology is the result of the merger between the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology of the University of Ghana School of Pharmacy (UGSOP) and the Department of Pharmacology of the erstwhile University of Ghana Medical School, when the University of Ghana adopted the collegiate system of governance in the 2014/2015 academic year. Under the current arrangement, the department has the mandate to offer pharmacology and toxicology courses at all levels to students in all disciplines of Ghana’s premier University who need to take pharmacology and toxicology courses. Under the collegiate system, the Department of Pharmacology and Toxicology handles all pharmacology and toxicology courses to students in the following schools in the College of Health Sciences:
  • School of Pharmacy
  • School of Medicine and Dentistry (Graduate Entry Medical Students)
  • School of Public Health
  • School of Nursing and Midwifery
  • School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences
  • School of Veterinary Medicine
The department is well endowed with experienced lecturers and researchers who are excelling in their research endeavours. Currently the staffing in the department is as follows:
