Brief History

DEPARTMENT OF PHYSIOLOGY

The Department of Physiology was established in October 1964 under the able leadership of the late Prof. H.H. Philips, as one of the pioneer departments in the then Ghana Medical School which was incepted in 1962. However, currently, it is under the administration of SBAHS. 

As part of the Department’s activities, the Department trains both undergraduate and postgraduate students, undertakes research as well as provides external services. The Department trains undergraduate students enrolled for the Bachelor of Medicine and Surgery (MB ChB) and Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) in the basic sciences stage of their Medical and Dental training. It also trains students in Nursing, the Allied Health Sciences, Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy programmes.  Our postgraduate programmes include MPhil and PhD in Physiology which has produced graduates, some of which are working in important institutions in Ghana including the public and private universities. 

Research activities in the Department are focusing on vasculopathy in sickle cell disease, arterial stiffness in diabetes and neurological disorders in Epilepsy.

Extension Services

The Department currently runs a pulmonary function testing service including spirometry, lung diffusion capacity testing, and cardiopulmonary exercise testing. The pulmonary function testing unit is headed by Dr. Charles Hayfron-Benjamin, a cardiopulmonary physiologist and anesthesiologist/critical care physician. Patients from the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital and other hospitals in Accra and Ghana are referred to the unit for evaluation of their pulmonary function.
