Head of Department's Welcome

The Department of Physics is one of the oldest departments in the University of Ghana. Over the years since its establishment, it has played host to some of the finest physicists and mathematicians Ghana has produced. It has also produced hundreds of scientists who have gone ahead to excel in their professional careers.

Physics is the fundamental science that seeks to understand the laws governing the universe, from the tiniest subatomic particles to the vast expanse of the cosmos. At our department, we are passionate about exploring the mysteries of the physical world and advancing human knowledge. Our department is more than just a place of learning and discovery; it is a vibrant and collaborative community.

The University of Ghana has set out a vision to become a research-intensive university, and furthermore seeks to create an enabling environment to make it a relevant body to national and global development through research, teaching and learning. This strategic vision is being executed with the values of integrity, commitment, respect, and loyalty.

In addition, the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) and the School of Physical and Mathematical Sciences (SPMS) have a joint vision of becoming internationally recognised in their research output and finding solutions to contemporary problems facing the country and the continent at large.

If you are a prospective student seeking to join the Department for undergraduate or postgraduate studies, you are welcome to take a look at the programmes and courses on offer. In case you have any questions, do not hesiate to e-mail the department at physics@ug.edu.gh for assistance.

If you are a researcher seeking collaboration, we are most happy to work with you. Kindly send an e-mail to physics@ug.edu.gh, or directly to any member of faculty you may want to work with. Of course, if you are able to come to the department in person, that would be wonderful.

You may also be interested in using some of our research equipment. We have available a state-of-the-art PanAlytical Empyrean X-Ray Powder Diffractometer and we provide services at a fee. Likewise, we have a CNC Mill for fabricating of mechanical parts. Talk to us if you need to design or manufacture bespoke metal parts for your machines.
