Volta Hall has held its Annual Leavers and Academic Excellence Awards Ceremony. The function was graced by officials of the University of Ghana including Prof. Mrs. Ellen Bortei-Doku Aryeetey, wife of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Atta-Peters, the Hall Master of Legon Hall, Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, the Director of Sports, past Wardens of Volta Hall, Awards Sponsors, parents of award winners and other distinguished guests. The Volta Hall Alumnae Association was also well-represented.

In her welcome address the Acting Warden of the Hall, Prof. Agnes S. Budu said function was organized to acknowledge and congratulate the ladies who were leaving the Hall after the completion of their studies at the university as well as recognize academic excellence and encourage students to work hard.

The Annual Leavers’ Dinner and Academic Excellence Awards was re-instituted in April 2013 after a long break. The aim is to motivate students of the Hall to pursue their studies with diligence and also provide a platform for final year students to be recognized and wished well as they complete school.

The event was also an opportunity for the Hall to recognize students who had distinguished themselves in sports during the academic year.  The distinguished sports women were presented with gifts and certificates. The presentation was made by Mrs. Christy Badu, the immediate past Deputy Warden on behalf of the Director of Sports. She was assisted by Ms. Lillian Kyei, the Sports Tutor.

The award for the Most Outstanding Sports Lady Ms. Gifty Dedo Nyako was presented by Dr. Bella Bello Bitugu, the Director of Sports.

Another highlight of the event, was a presentation to Professor (Mrs.) Ramatu Mahama Al-Hassan, a recently retired Fellow of the Hall. She was presented with a parting gift from the Hall, by Dr. (Mrs.) Vivian Tackie-Ofosu, the Deputy Senior Tutor.  Prof. Al-Hassan’s award was received on her behalf by her son, Mr. Al-Hassan as she was away on a project in Tamale.

The climax of the evening was the presentation of awards to students of the Hall who had excelled academically during the 2013/2014 academic year. In all, ten cash prizes and certificates were awarded.

All the leavers were presented with special souvenirs – a mug with the embossment of both the UG and Volta Hall logos, with the inscription: ‘I am a proud Alumna’.  It is expected that the souvenirs would constantly remind the Leavers of their time in Volta Hall and the University of Ghana as a whole, as well as challenge them to project a positive image of Volta Hall, by distinguishing themselves and make a positive difference wherever they find themselves.

Mrs. Audrey Abakaha former J.C.R President (2000-2001) and currently a Manager at the Barclays Bank, Head Office, Accra, shared her experiences with the leavers and gave them some words of encouragement. She encouraged the leavers to develop a positive attitude towards the challenges in life and always strive to give of their best no matter the circumstances.

The programme which was interspersed with good music and dancing was eventually brought to a close at 10:00 p.m. with a vote of thanks by the MC for the occasion, Dr. Naa Dodua Dodoo. She thanked the Volta Hall Management, the Planning Committee, UG Officials and parents and guardians and all present for making the evening a good one. A closing prayer was said by Ms. Patience Owusu Boadi, after which award winners had the opportunity to interact and pose for pictures with their benefactors and  Hall Management.
