Vice-Chancellor Tours UGMC

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo and some members of University Management have toured the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to familiarise themselves with the operations and facilities of the Centre. This follows from a courtesy call the leadership of UGMC paid the Vice-Chancellor in January this year.

Welcoming the UG delegation, Dr. Darius Osei, Chief Executive Officer, UGMC, expressed excitement about the visit, saying, together with his team, they had been looking forward to receiving the Vice-Chancellor and her entourage. He indicated that the visit was timely because Phase II of the UGMC project had been completed and officially handed over to the Medical Centre. Dr. Osei mentioned that UGMC had sponsored the studies of twenty-five (25) general practitioners and nurses to train as specialists. He added that UGMC is in agreement with the College of Health Sciences for research fellows and students to conduct training and clinicals at the Centre. Dr. Darius Osei extended his appreciation to the staff of the Centre for all the good work.

In brief remarks, Prof. Amfo thanked the CEO for the warm reception. She emphasised that the research component of the Centre’s role should be continually encouraged.

The UG delegation was later conducted around the Centre by the Public Relations Officer at the Centre, Mrs. Barbara Owusu-Hemeng and the respective heads of the units visited. The tour began from the Medical Simulation and Training Centre where they visited the Simulation Theatre; the designated room for clinical and research trials and the Women and Children’s Block where they had the opportunity to visit the Gynaecology and women’s private wards. The delegation was also shown the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit and the Paediatric Wards.

The Vice-Chancellor and her team also toured the Haematology Laboratory, Pathology Microscopy Laboratory, Cath Lab Angiography, Resuscitation Unit and the Centre’s Intensive Care Unit, which is the biggest in the country.
