Vice Chancellor Receives Delegation from IESS and University Of Tokyo

A joint delegation from the Institute for Environment and Sanitation Studies (IESS) and the  University of Tokyo (UT) have paid a courtesy call on the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu.  The Pro- Vice- Chancellor (ASA), Prof. Kwame Offei was also present to receive the delegation. The meeting was to update the Vice Chancellor and the Pro- Vice- Chancellor (ASA) on a workshop organized by the IESS (UG) in collaboration with the International Society for Sustainable Science (UT) under the theme: The Triple Aim Journey of Sustainability Science in Africa: Healthy Ecosystems, Economic Equity and Traditional Values.

Welcoming the delegation, the Vice- Chancellor emphasized the need to take sustainability and other environmental issues very important because they affect us dearly. He expressed his gratitude to Prof. Kazuhiko Takeuchi, Senior Vice - Rector and Assistant - Secretary - General of the UN and Director of the Integrated Research System for Sustainability Science (IR3S), UT and his team for leading the way. And challenged IESS to take advantage of such an opportunity to make UG  the leading institution in Sustainability Science in Africa.

On his part, Prof. Takeuchi explained that the workshop was put together to discuss how the two institutions could promote Sustainability Science through a collaborated project.

Prof. Offei was excited that such a workshop had taken place in Ghana since the nation’s food security is threatened by climate change. He was hopeful that as the workshop develops into a collaborative project, some of these climate change challenges would be addressed.

The Director of IESS, Prof. Chris Gordon who led the delegation pointed out that, IESS was in the process of rolling out a Master’s programme in Sustainability Science and that by partnering with IR3S which has more than 10 years’ experience in this field, University of Ghana can be at par with other renowned Sustainability Science establishments.

Members of the delegation from United Nations University- Institute for Advance Study of Sustainability (UNU-IAS), University of Tokyo are Prof. Osamu Saito, Prof. Hirotaka Matsuda and Dr. Kwabena Antwi. The rest of the delegation from IESS included Dr. Benjamin Ofori, Dr. Dan Nukpetah and Dr. Adelina Mensah.
