Vice-Chancellor Inaugurates 75th Anniversary Celebration Planning Committee

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo has inaugurated a 22-member Planning Committee to plan the University of Ghana’s 75th Anniversary Celebration which comes off in August 2023.

The Committee which is chaired by Prof. Akosua Adomako Ampofo, Former Director, Institute of African Studies and co-chaired by Prof. Clement I.K. Appah, Head, Department of Linguistics, begins work with an immediate effect till the end of the celebrations. The Committee is expected to plan a series of year-long events that will culminate in the realisation of a legacy project and fundraising to undertake infrastructural projects. 

Prof. Amfo, in her speech, outlined the terms of reference of the Committee which include advice on a suitable theme for the anniversary celebrations that projects the University of Ghana’s current outlook as embodied in the Vice-Chancellor’s strategic objectives; draw up  a year-long scheduled activities for the anniversary celebration; develop a communication plan to adequately inform and involve the University Community and other stakeholders in the anniversary celebration; organise the launch of the anniversary celebration in August 2022; support ongoing fundraising as well as initiate new ones, advice and lead the initiation and implementation of a legacy project for the anniversary celebration.

The Vice-Chancellor urged the Committee to come up with a plan that will have the whole University of Ghana community involved in the celebration. “Principally, I want to see student centered activities and a strong presence of the alumni in our celebration”, she added.

She further tasked the Committee to come up with realistic and achievable plans. She shared a series of ideas that could guide the Committee.

Prof. Amfo also proposed for the competition of the Anniversary Logo by all members of the University Community.

The two Pro-Vice-Chancellors, Professors Felix Ankomah Asante, Office of Research, Innovation and Development (ORID) and Gordon Awandare, Academic and Student Affairs (ASA) together with the Registrar, Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah expressed their hope for an excellent work from the Committee. They noted that their units will always be happy to offer their support to the Committee. 

Prof. Akosua Adomako Ampofo, expressed pleasure to work with all members of the Committee. She was hopeful that the period of work would be very exciting. She expressed confidence in the anniversary being one that a lot of people will remember. She asked the Committee to remain poised for the work.
