University of Ghana Receives Delegation from New York University

The University of Ghana has received a 25-member delegation from the University of New York, Steinhardt, USA to discuss issues of higher educational systems in Ghana.

The delegation which was made up of post-graduate students from Steinhardt Institute for Higher Education Policy was led by Prof. Teboho Moja, Programme Director of the Higher and Post-secondary Education and Prof. Ann Marcus, Director of Institute for Higher Education Policy.

In brief remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu welcomed the delegation and expounded on the structures of the University. He explained that the University was governed on the principles of rule of law and upholds the highest level of ethics as rules and regulations governing the school are respected and adhered to.

In outlining the University’s leadership philosophy, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu indicated that the University strives to provide the model leadership needed for the country to learn and emulate. He cited the activities of the University of Ghana’s Green Team as one of the ways the University is providing leadership in the country.

Earlier, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, Registrar, gave a brief overview of the higher education systems in the country. She stated that although there are financial constraints, the University provides an array of opportunities which students are advised to make good use of. She further outlined the activities of her office in supporting the strategic goals of the University. The Registrar also revealed plans of the University in expanding its alumni base through the Institutional Advancement Office and Alumni Relations.

Professor Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, Provost, College of Health Sciences in his remarks, educated the delegation on the activities of the College of Health Sciences. According to him, the College provides both theoretical and practical education to students. He also noted that, students are equipped mentally to deal with the challenges that they are confronted with in their course of study.

As part of the visit, the delegation was briefed on the overview of the University of Ghana’s Curricula Options, Admissions Processes and Career Prospects by Mr. Emmanuel Baidoo, College Secretary, College of Basic and Applied Sciences and Dr. Bridget Ben-Naimah, Acting Director of Careers and Counselling Centre.

Prof. Godfred Bokpin, Acting Dean of Student Affairs and Mrs. Maamie Hutchful-Nortey, a Research Development Officer, Office of Research, Innovation and Development gave presentations on student life on campus and the international collaborations and faculty issues at the University.
