The University of Ghana (UG) participated in the 4th Ghana-France Higher Education Conference that took place on Tuesday 3rd October 2017 at the Golden Tulip Hotel in Accra.
The conference was organised through the joint efforts of the French Embassy in Ghana, Campus France and Vice-Chancellors of Universities in Ghana (VCG) with the goal of strengthening the relationship between Ghana and France in terms of higher education cooperation. During the event, heads of Ghana's ten public universities met to have high-level talks with representatives from some of France's top universities.
The University of Ghana’s Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu gave the keynote address on the theme, ‘Relationships between French and Ghanaian universities: review and prospects’. This kick-started two sets of roundtable discussions on the themes of: ‘Examples and Innovations in Ghana- France Cooperation; French language and Francophonie: their place in cooperation projects and curricula?
The Dean of International Programmes UG, Professor Ama de-Graft Aikins, spoke on the theme: ‘How French is perceived in cooperation projects’ on the second round table. UG was also represented by the Provost of College of Humanities, Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah and International Relations Liaison of UGBS, Dr Gordon Abekah-Nkrumah.
The conference was also attended by government officials from both countries including the Minister of State in charge of Tertiary Education, Hon. Prof Kwesi Yankah and the French Ambassador to Ghana His Excellency, Francois Pujolas.
In the afternoon, the delegation from France, representatives from Ghana’s public universities and UG Deans and Heads of Departments convened at the University of Ghana’s International House to hold bilateral talks on higher education partnership between French and Ghanaian Universities.
The afternoon event was co-hosted by UG’s International Programmes Office and the Office of the Technical Expert in charge of Higher Education Cooperation between France and Ghana. The Provost of College of Humanities, Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah chaired the welcoming session after which the meeting participants interacted in small group discussions on partnerships.

The Ghanaian and French officials discussed the potential for new partnerships in student and faculty exchange, research, joint degree programmes and projects or to strengthen existing partnerships. Concrete UG-France partnerships emerging from the afternoon interaction will be facilitated by the Office of International Programmes.

In total, 16 French higher education institutions, 19 representatives from various schools and departments within UG, and 7 representatives from other public universities were represented, at the meeting
