University of Ghana Hosts GAUA Southern Sector Continuous Professional Development (CPD) Workshop

The Ghana Association of University Administrators (GAUA) in collaboration with Institute of Public Relations (IPR) Ghana has held a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) workshop for members in the Southern Sector. The Workshop which was on the theme ‘Contemporary Trends in Communication Practice’ was held at the Great Hall of University of Ghana from January 30-31, 2020 with the aim of deepening participants understanding and application of effective communication and public relations in the work of administrators.

Welcoming participants, the University of Ghana GAUA President, Mr. Baffour Awuah Kwabi disclosed that the CPD workshop was to strengthen capacity and engage stakeholders to sharpen their skills for effective communication which will help to define their continued relevance to university administration in order to reach the ultimate aim of impacting positively on their institution. Mr. Kwabi noted that the workshop which was part of activities making GAUA’s 40th anniversary celebrations, was the third and last in the series with the first and second held at University of Cape Coast and Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology respectively. He added that through the partnership with Institute of Public Relations, Ghana, the Institute has agreed to provide free membership at affiliate level to all GAUA members for a period of one year. In his concluding remarks, the UG GAUA President said “as we reflect on 40 years of the existence of our Association, we need to chart paths that define our continued relevance to university administration, this we cannot do alone as individuals since we know there is strength in numbers”.

In a message delivered on behalf of the GAUA National President, Dr. Anthony Gollo, Vice President, indicated that the topics chosen for the workshop were apt as they were expected to expose GAUA members to the challenges that come with managing institutions, divisions, departments, units and sections and proffer ways to deal with them using modern and effective communication/PR skills. He expressed gratitude to IPR Ghana, Management of University of Ghana, Local Executives and members of the Planning Committee for their support to GAUA in making the workshop possible. He added that due to the dynamic nature of the landscape of higher education and its management in Ghana and around the world, the Association must put in place strategies in order to respond to the growing needs and trends of University administration. Dr. Gollo also reminded participants of GAUA’s 40th anniversary celebrations and urged members to actively participate to ensure a memorable event.

Registrar, University of Ghana, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia

Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, Registrar, University of Ghana, in her remarks noted that effective communication and public relations was an integral part of administrator’s work and encouraged participants to learn as much possible from the presentations. She also encouraged participants to network especially among colleagues from other institutions and learn new things.
 
Mr. Kwabena Asare Okae-Anti, Lecturer, Department of Communication and Media Studies, University of Education, Winneba, delivered a presentation on the topic, “Effective Communication in a Digital Era: Planning and Implementation” for day 1 while Dr. Kweku Rockson, a former Director of Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ) and a Communications Consultant took participants through the topics “Stakeholder Engagement: the Tertiary Education Perspective” and “Developing Crisis Response Communication Strategies in an Omni-Channel Age”.

An estimated number of 220 GAUA members from the host institution, University of Ghana (UG); University of Education, Winneba (UEW); Ghana Institute of Journalism (GIJ); University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS); Central University; Ghana Technology University College (GTUC) and Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and the GAUA National Executive Committee attended the 2020 GAUA CPD workshop.
