University Basic School Pupil Placed Second In 2020 Spelling Bee Competition

Miss Aku Miishee Allotey of University Basic School, Legon placed second at the just ended National Finals of the 2020 Spelling Bee Competition.

The 13th Spelling Bee competition, organized by the Young Education Foundation (YEF), commenced in May 2019. Participants were taken through series of training in etymologies, root words, affixes, varieties of English as well as vocabularies.

The competition was keenly contested by pupils from six cities in Ghana. All contestants wrote regional vocabulary test and spelt words as part of the qualifying process. In all, two hundred and eighty-three (283) spellers qualified for the nationals; sixteen (16) out of this number were from the University Basic School.

 

The National Finals came off at the Great Hall of Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) at the invitation of His Royal Majesty, Otumfuor Osei Tutu II, Asantehene and the Chancellor of KNUST.

 

Aku Miishee got to the zenith of the competition and emerged second out of the lot.  For her prize, she received a Silver medal, Certificate of Recognition, a return ticket to Nairobi, a cash prize of GH₵2,000, a DSTV Decoder, one year subscription to Encyclopedia Britannica online, GH₵800 worth of book voucher and products from the sponsors.
