UG's Students Financial Aid Office to receive $100,000 from General Electric

The Students Financial Aid Office (SFAO) of the University of Ghana is to receive a $100,000 scholarship package from General Electric (GE), a multi-national company that provides services in Power Generation, Oil & Gas, and Healthcare sectors.

The package which was announced during a cocktail reception organised in honour of GE’s visiting Chairman, Mr. Jeff Immelt was followed by the presentation of a symbolic cheque to Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey.

One hundred students of the University of Ghana will have their tuition fully paid until they complete their studies.

Prof. Aryeetey expressed the University's delight at the donation which he noted will go a long way to support more brilliant needy students in the university. He noted that the University was looking forward to more partnerships with the company.

In a release issued by the company before the event, the Chief Executive Officer of GE Ghana, Mr. Leslie Nelson, disclosed plans by the Company to provide Oil and Gas scholarships for Ghanaians, training both locally and internationally at GE’s Oil and Gas University in Houston, Texas, Florence, Italy, Aberdeen and Scotland. Mr. Nelson who is an alumnus of the University said the scholarship will target students from Science and Engineering Departments.

The Pro-Vice Chancellor in charge of Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Kwame Offei, who initiated discussions with GE on the scholarship scheme, will lead deliberations on the details of the package.
