UG holds remembrance service in memory of Prof. Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere

President Mahama commiserating with the wife of the late Prof. Kwado Asenso-Okyere

President John Mahama has joined University Officials and other dignitaries to mourn Professor Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere, a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana at a solemn Remembrance service held in his honour at the Commonwealth Hall.

Some of the many dignitaries included Hon. Justice Dr. Samuel K  Date-Bah, Chairman of University Council, Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Kweku Osam, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. John Gyapong, Pro-Vice Chancellor, Research, Innovation and Development,Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang, Minister of Education, Emeritus Prof J.H Kwabena Nketia, , Prof. Ivan Addae-Mensah, a former Vice Chancellor and the Rev. Fr. Wisdom Larweh, Parochial Administrator of the St. Thomas Aquinas Parish.

A cross section of dignitaries

Prof Asenso-Okyere who was Vice Chancellor of the University of Ghana from 2002 to 2006 and an Old Vandal,  passed on Saturday, May 10, 2014 while on a Food and Agricultural Organisation mission outside Ghana at age 67. He is survived with a wife and six children.

The Old Vandals Association, members of the University Teachers Association Ghana, Ghana Association of University Administrators, Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Institute of Statistical Social and Economic Research, Federation of Universities Senior Staff Association of Ghana, Teachers and Educational Workers Union, University of Ghana Alumni Association all paid glowing tributes to his memory.

Speaking on behalf of the President, Prof Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang said  Prof. Asenso-Okyere had paid his due to the nation by helping to position the country, UG, family, community and other associations he belonged to on a high pedestal.

She urged the family, country, loved ones and other mourners to see the death of Prof. Asenso-Okyere as a commemoration of a life fully lived and has now been called by His maker gloriously.

Professor Ernest Aryeetey, Vice Chancellor University of Ghana, noted Prof Asenso-Okyere’s appreciation for beautiful things demonstrated by the launch of a beautification programme at University of Ghana and ISSER during his tenure as Vice Chancellor.

Prof Aryeetey lauded Prof. Asenso-Okyere’s experience in research and advocacy on economic development issues such as food and agriculture, health and nutrition and international trade policies .

President John Dramani Mahama, an alumni of Commonwealth Hall, in a brief ceremony after the remembrance service, donated a 46-seater Youtong bus to the Old Vandal Association to support the group’s activities.
