UG Holds July 2018 Congregation Ceremonies

The University of Ghana has held the July 2018 Congregation ceremonies for students who completed various programmes of study from the four Colleges of the University namely, College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS), College of Education (CoE), College of Health Sciences (CHS), and College of Humanities (CoH). A total of 3,184 students graduated at various levels from the Colleges of the University as follows: CHS (365); COH (1,661); COE (34); and CBAS (1,124).

There were four sessions held at the Great Hall of the University; two sessions each on Friday, July 20 and Saturday, July 21. The first day’s Congregation ceremonies were dedicated to the COH (BSc. Administration Programme) and CBAS. CHS and COE had a joint session on the second day which was followed in the afternoon by the COH (Graduate Programmes).

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu in his address to the Congregation highlighted some achievements of the various strategic teams, successes in the area of teaching, learning and research, on-going infrastructural developments, the University’s position on the world ranking and launch of the Endowment Fund which was part of activities marking the University’s 70th anniversary celebration. While congratulating H.E Mr. Kofi Annan for a successful tenure of office, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu mentioned the investiture and swearing-in of Mrs. Mary Chinery-Hesse as incoming Chancellor on Wednesday, August 1, 2018. In his concluding remarks, the Vice-Chancellor urged the graduands to be guided by the values of the University which are: integrity, commitment, respect and loyalty.

The Chairman of Council, Professor Yaw Twumasi represented the Chancellor in presiding over the first session while Prof. Yaa Ntiamoa-Baidu, Dr. Ama Essel and Mr. Reindorf Baah Perbi, Members of the University Council, took turns to preside over the second, third and last sessions of the Congregation ceremonies.

Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, Registrar of the University in a brief remark indicated that this year marks the University’s 70th Anniversary. She explained that the University was founded in 1948 as the University College of Gold Coast, affiliated to the University of London until 1961 when it attained a fully-fledged University status, awarding its own degrees. The Registrar encouraged all graduands to actively participate in the year-long celebrations especially the Glitz Ball fundraising dinner scheduled for November.

As custom of the University, all four sessions had guest speakers chosen for their various achievements to encourage the graduands. The guest speakers were Mr. Ivor Agyeman-Duah, a Visiting Scholar and Director of the Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka Foundation at the University of Johannesburg, Ing. William Amuna, Policy Advisor to the Minister of Energy, Mrs. Mansa Nettey, Chief Executive Officer, Standard Chartered Bank, Ghana and Mr. Franklin Sowa, Director of Marketing and Sales, Graphic Communication Group Limited.

Valedictory speeches were also delivered by outstanding graduands of the various graduating class. Naa Oboshie Anang, Abena Apraku, Malvin Ofosu-Boateng and Golda Anambane delivered speeches on behalf of COH (BSc. Administration), CBAS, CHS/COE and COH (Graduate Programmes) graduation Class respectively.
