UBS Performs Ground-Breaking Ceremony to Mark the Commencement of Work on School Canteen Project

The University Basic Schools (UBS) has held a brief ground-breaking ceremony for the commencement of work on the School’s canteen project.

Mr. E.K.B Appiah, welcomed the guests and gave a brief history of the canteen project, indicating that it was the initiative of a sub-committee of the Parent Teacher Association (PTA).

Mr. Ishmael Edjekumhene, Chairman of the PTA, reiterated the sentiments expressed by Mr. Appiah, and said he was happy that everything had been put in place for the commencement of the project, which he noted, has the full support of the PTA.

Mr. Kofinti, Acting Director of Physical Development and Municipal Services (PDMSD), gave a brief technical description of the project. He stated that the facility has a 250-seating capacity, consisting of a kitchen, server, changing room for kitchen staff, and other service areas.  He stated further that the facility will be constructed in three phases, and that the first phase will be completed within three months.

Dr. Jemima Anderson, Chairperson of the School Management Board, emphasised that the health of the pupils is of primary importance to the Management Board.  She said the project is intended to provide a facility where the pupils can have their meals in a hygienic environment.  She expressed gratitude to the Vice-Chancellor, members of the PTA executives, staff, university community, and other individuals who have contributed to the commencement of work on the project.

The Vice Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, added that the School Canteen project will increase the stock of infrastructure of the University and, even more importantly, serve as a place for developing social skills, such as table manners and self-reliance.  He charged the contractor, Dy-Myks Construction Limited, to deliver on time. He urged management and staff of UBS to form a Green Club to ensure a clean environment.

The Vice-Chancellor, Chairperson of the Management Board and Chairman of the PTA, planted trees to symbolically mark the commencement of work on the project.

The Deputy Headmistress, Mrs. Christina Armah, who moved the vote of thanks, was appreciative of the presence of the Vice-Chancellor and other officials at the ceremony, and also expressed gratitude to the Management Board, parents, staff, pupils and friends of UBS for the support in making the ceremony a success.

Present at the ceremony were the Headmaster, UBS, Mr. Alfred Codjoe Allotey, Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, the immediate past Chairperson of the UBS Management Board, Prof. Nana Aba Amfo, Dr. Josephine Dzahene-Quarshie, executive members of the PTA, parents and JHS 3 pupils of the school.  The School Band was in attendance.  They put up a spectacular performance, and also provided musical accompaniment to the hymns.
