UBS Holds Maiden Graduation Ceremony

The University of Ghana Basic School (UBS) has held its maiden graduation ceremony for pupils who have successfully completed their Junior High School (JHS) education.

The graduation ceremony was organised in the stead of the school’s ‘’After School Party’’ which could not come off due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Dr. Gloria Ansa, Board Chairperson, UBS, in her declaration of purpose congratulated all the graduands and urged them to continue working hard wherever they find themselves.

Mrs. Christina Ama Adwubi Armah, Deputy Head, JHS, in a speech delivered on behalf of Mr. Alfred Codjoe-Allotey, the Headmaster, commended the students for the resilience and courage they showed in their academics irrespective of the challenges posed by the Covid-19 pandemic. Mrs. Armah noted how both teachers and students, amidst the challenges and difficulties of Covid-19, adopted technology to aid in teaching and learning. “Our teachers are now equipped with basic tools of online teaching with various links: Google Classroom, Google Meet, Google Form etc. Our pupils have also gained great interest in online learning and can navigate easily into their areas of learning”, she stated.

Mr. Bernard Avle, General Manager of Citi FM/TV and an alumnus of the School, who was the Guest of Honor, urged the graduands to use the time they have wisely. “The most important thing between now and University graduation is Time”, he added. He encouraged them to acquire a skill as an addendum to talent, knowledge and attitude as it is very essential in their success journey. “Talent is raw material. To the talent you must get knowledge, to the talent and knowledge you need skill and attitude to make you successful”, he said.

Master Kojo Ghansah, Head Perfect, in his valedictory speech expressed gratitude to the teachers for imparting knowledge to them and shaping their lives. He specially thanked the Headmaster for his supervision and the fatherly role he played in their lives. Master Ghansah thanked all parents for the support, time and money they keep investing in their lives. “You watched us grow from birth till now and we are sure you are proud of us and certainly this is not the last time you will be proud of us”, he stated. He encouraged the graduands to continually hold unto the values imbibed in them.

Graduands were led by Ms. Suguru-Veila Yakubu and Master Kweku Afranie, Boys Prefect, to pledge their loyalty to the school, and change their tassel respectively.

Certificates were presented to the graduands as proof of the completion of their JHS education. Special awards were presented to eight pupils for their excellence in different competitions. Ethan Nartey was awarded for winning the first position in the 2020 edition of the National Virtual Robotics and Coding Competition and Daniel Asamoah Twum for placing eighth in the same 2020 edition of the National Virtual Robotics and Coding Competition. Nana Adwoa Yeboaa Agyemang was awarded for winning the first position in the National Richoco Essay Competition, Junior High Category; Naa Aku Mishee Allotey for attaining the second position in the 2020 National Spelling Competition; Hikimatu Usman Namah, for winning the first position in the 2020 edition of the National Bookworm Competition, Upper Primary Category and Kayla Betrams Unachukwu, for attaining the third position in the Maiden BIC Junior Art Master Challenge, 2021.

Ms. Adwoa Yeboaa Agyeman, Girls’ Prefect, moved the vote of thanks for the occasion.

The ceremony was interspersed with a cultural display by the Ghana Dance Ensemble and harmonious hymns from the graduands.

Some officials who were present at the graduation were Mrs. Emelia Agyei- Mensah, Registrar and Mrs. Elizier T. Ameyaw, Director, Public Affairs. Members of the UBS Management Board; invited guests, parents and staff of the University Basic School.
