Rotary Club Accra, Legon East Chapter, Refurbishes Children’s Ward of the University of Ghana Hospital

The Legon-East Chapter of the Rotary Club Ghana has refurbished the children’s ward of the University of Ghana Hospital at the cost of GH¢250, 000. The ward was remodeled to accommodate a neonatal unit and disinfection room, an expanded doctor’s office, installation of oxygen fixtures, installation of six (6) close circuit television cameras, installation of nine (9) air-conditioner units, replacement of all sanitary wares in the facility, installation of additional sanitary wares, masonry and painting works.

At a ceremony to return the ward to the University of Ghana held on Saturday 12th June, 2021, Rev. Prof. Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi, Provost of the College of Health Sciences, represented the Vice-Chancellor. In his speech, he expressed the University’s gratitude to the Club for its generosity and indicated that the University cherished its partnership with the Rotary Club of Ghana and was elated that the facility will aid in the provision of better healthcare for the children of the University and surrounding communities. Prof. Ayeh-Kumi also urged the hospital authorities to take good care of the refurbished ward.

Dr. Mark Frempong, Director of the University of Ghana Health Services, recounted the humble beginnings of the children’s ward and paid glowing tribute to the pioneer pediatric team for their dedication. He also expressed immense appreciation to the Rotary Club of Accra-Legon East for its efforts in seeing to the successful completion of the project.

Prof. Robert Ebo Hinson, Director at the Office of Institutional Advancement, commended the Rotary Club for its timely intervention as the University had made several attempts in the past to refurbish the children’s ward. Prof. Hinson was certain that the refurnished ward will be beneficial to all stakeholders and would constitute a practical demonstration of the Club’s ‘Four-Way Test Principles’. He appealed to the Club for similar interventions to be extended to other wards/units of the hospital.

The President of the Club, Rotarian Somuah Tenkorang, expressed gratitude to the hospital administration for providing the needed directives and for monitoring the progress of the project to ensure compliance with acceptable standards. He disclosed that, in addition to the medical supplies donated to the University Hospital in 2019, the Club decided to embark on the refurbishment of the Children’s Ward in 2021 as part of the Club’s yearly projects. Also, Rotarian Jefferey Afful, past International District Governor, congratulated the Club on its service to humanity and charged the hospital administration to maintain the facility.

Delivering the vote of thanks, the Head of the Pediatric Unit, Dr. Agyeiwaa Bonuedie, expressed the pediatric team’s appreciation to the Club for its kindness. She pledged the commitment of the hospital administration to a good maintenance culture, which will ensure that the service value of the facility endures.

The facility was opened for inspection after Rev. Prof. Patrick Ayeh-Kumi and Rotarian Jefferey Afful unveiled the plaque.

Present at the ceremony were Mr. Charles Kofinti, Director of PDMSD; Ms. Eccles Andoh, Acting Director of Public Affairs; executives and members of Rotary Club Ghana, students and employees of the University of Ghana Hospital
