Registrar Spearheads Donation to Support University of Ghana Staff Village Crèche & Nursery Facility

Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia presenting the donation to the Staff Village Residents Association

The Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia has presented an amount of Twenty-Six Thousand and Twenty Ghana Cedis (GH¢26,020.00) to the Staff Village Residents Association (STAVRA) towards the renovation of the Staff Village Crèche and Nursery facility.

In a brief ceremony held at the Office of the Registrar, Mrs. Haizel-Ashia indicated that this was to redeem a pledge she made earlier to mobilize funds to support the refurbishment project, when she inaugurated the first phase of the project in October this year.   She said she subsequently sold the idea to friends, family and a cross section of members of the University community who generously made contributions to support the project.

She expressed immense appreciation to all who contributed to support the project and was delighted that the initial pledge of GH¢10.000.00 has been exceeded, and now doubled.  She charged the leadership of STAVRA to ensure judicious use of the money to better the living conditions of the pupils.

The donation was received on behalf of the association by Mrs. Sophia Dapaah Mantey, Chairperson of the Staff Village Residents Association (STAVRA) and Mr. Elvis Owusu Appiah, Vice Chairperson.

In brief remarks, Mrs. Sophia Dapaah Mantey, Chairperson of STAVRA, expressed her appreciation on behalf of the Staff Village Residents Association for the donation and promised to use the money judiciously to achieve the desired purpose.

Present at the ceremony were some Senior Assistant Registrars and Assistant Registrars from various units of the University, some of the benefactors of  the project.

So far, three Churches from within the community, namely, The Seventh-Day Adventist Church, Legon, Legon Baptist Church and St. Thomas Aquinas Parish, Legon, have responded with a total amount of GH¢40,000.00 being raised so far.

Management of Kingdom Books and Stationery have also promised to stock the library to the tune of GH¢10.000.00, after the refurbishment.

The refurbishment of the Staff Village Crèche and Nursery facility was undertaken when the Executives of the Staff Village Residents Association (STAVRA) noted with much concern that parents in the community mostly took their children outside campus for their pre-school education despite the fact that there was a crèche and nursery facility in the Staff Village. This situation was attributed to the deplorable state of the facility.

The residents therefore decided to renovate the facility despite the lack of money earmarked for the project at the time. After consultations with Management, it was agreed that letters be sent out to various organisations to solicit funds to finance the project.
