Prof. Kwawukume Receives Honorary Fellowship

Prof. Enyonam Yao Kwawukume has been elected an Honorary Fellow of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (ACOG) in recognition of his significant contribution to teaching and research in the area of Obstetrics and Gynaecology.  The College is dedicated to the maintenance of the highest standards in Patient Care, Medical Evaluation and Research in Obstetrics and Gynaecology.

The ACOG supported Carnegie Corporation of New York Obstetrics and Gynaecology Postgraduate programme, was established in Ghana in 1989, when as a doctor, Prof Kwawukume started his residency. He took advantage of the opportunity to complete his training, passed all examinations and become a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons. He has since worked with the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology of the University of Ghana Medical School, where he rose from lecturer to Professor and later, a former Head of the Department.

Prof. Kwawukume has co-authored two foundational textbooks, Comprehensive Obstetrics in the Tropics and Comprehensive Gynaecology in the Tropics. These textbooks have been described as the first texts written by Africans for Africans, which have become classics and led to high success in examinations by residents and medical students who use them.

He is the first occupant of K.K. Bentsi-Enchill Chair at the University of Ghana Medical School. He is also the past Chairman of the Obstetrics and Gynaecology faculty at the West African College of Physicians and Surgeons and a former Director of the International Family Planning Fellowship Programme in Ghana. He is President of the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Ghana, representing Ghana on the Executive Board of The International Federation of Gynaecology and Obstetrics (FIGO).
