Prof. Josef Kwaku Ametefe Amuzu and Prof. Andrew Seth Ayettey appointed Professors Emeriti

The University Council has approved the appointment of Prof. Josef Kwaku Ametefe Amuzu and Prof. Andrew Seth Ayettey as Professors Emeriti following recommendation by the Appointments Board of the University.

Professor Josef Kwaku Ametefe Amuzu

Professor Josef Kwaku Ametefe Amuzu obtained a PhD in Physics from the University of Cambridge, in 1976.   He  obtained BSc. (Hons) and MSc. degrees in Physics from the University of Ghana in 1972 and 1973, respectively.

Professor Josef Kwaku Ametefe Amuzu, a former Pro- Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, was first appointed as a Demonstrator in the Department of Physics in 1972 and subsequently a Lecturer in September, 1976.   In October 1981, he was promoted to the grade of Senior Lecturer; promoted as an Associate Professor in January 1988 and Professor in 1996.   He has served as Head of Department of Physics and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences.   He was appointed Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University in March 1998 until February 2002 when he  retired from the services of the University after 43 years of meritorious service.

As an academic, he taught several courses, and supervised a number of theses, in addition to research carried out.  Prof. Amuzu is credited with mentoring students and faculty in his department, and continued taking an interest in his department well after his retirement.  He has served and continues to serve as Chair of the Graduate Committee of the Department of Physics.

Prof. Amuzu has served on a number of statutory and Ad Hoc Boards and Committees of the University as well as made his mark serving on boards and committees at the national and international levels. 

 

Prof. Andrew Seth Ayettey

Prof. Andrew Seth Ayettey obtained a BSc degree (Anatomy) from the University of Ghana in 1971 and subsequently obtained an MB ChB from the University of Ghana in 1974.  After enrolling at the University of Cambridge, he obtained his PhD in 1978.

Prof. Andrew Seth Ayettey joined the University as a Lecturer in the Department of Anatomy in 1978.   He was promoted as Senior Lecturer in 1982, Associate Professor in 1991 and Professor in 1995.   He was appointed as Head of the Department of Anatomy from 1981-1996, and is on record to be the longest serving Head of Department. He also served as Vice Dean and subsequently substantive Dean of the University of Ghana Medical School.  

As a foundation Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Ayettey established the Postgraduate Endowment Fund to provide financial support to students in academic and residency programmes.  Through his efforts, faculty from the Department have benefited from various institutional collaborations. Professor Ayettey is credited for setting up the Medical Education Unit, which was responsible for training faculty in effective medical pedagogy and assessment of lecturers by students.  He contributed greatly to the area of research, teaching, mentorship and administration.

As an academic, he taught several courses, and supervised a number of theses.  Prof. Ayettey has mentored students and faculty in the Department of Anatomy, in addition to research carried out.  He has published widely in his area of specialization.

Prof. Ayettey has served on a number of statutory and Ad-Hoc Boards and Committees of the University. He has also made his mark serving on a number of  national and international Boards and Committees such  as Chairman of the Prison Service Council and member of the VALCO Board, Judicial Service Council, Medical and Dental Council and Council for Scientific Research into Plant Medicine.

The Statute governing the appointment of an Emeritus Professor at the University of Ghana provides that candidates for the position of Emeritus Professor shall be active in their field and within easy reach of the University.  The title is only confered on a full Professor who has left the services of the University. Even though Professors Emeriti do not receive a stipend, they have access to University facilities such as the library and secretarial support and rnay assist the work of the Departrnent for which the expenses of the Emeritus Professor shall be paid.
