The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu has inaugurated a Panel to review the collegiate system of governance at the University of Ghana.  Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana (1985-1992) is the Chairman of the Review Panel.

In his opening remarks, the Vice Chancellor recounted the purpose for the inception of the collegiate system which is; to provide a platform for flexibility in the choices of courses for students, rationalize programmes and courses and creating effectiveness and efficiency in the administration process by decentralizing the central administration. In considering the aim however, not much attention was paid to the cost involved; the increased number of departments and schools, the inability to remunerate Deans and Directors, the increased bureaucratic process as Deans now have to contact the Vice-Chancellor through the Provost, which are some of the challenges that have characterized this new system.

It was in this light that the University Management decided to review the collegiate system three years after its inception. He also spelt out some functions of the Review Panel which is to; review the current collegiate system, identify the shortcomings of the system and make recommendations to improve the governance structure of the University.

In his response, Professor Akilagpa Sawyerr thanked University Management on behalf of the Panel for the confidence reposed in them to undertake this task. He assured management that they will work hard and endeavour to do their best to assist in the development of the University.
