President Mahama tours UG Medical Centre Project Site

The President of the Republic of Ghana, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama has toured the ongoing UG Medical Centre project site which is expected to be operational early next year.

In brief remarks after the tour, President Mahama, noted that the new Teaching Hospital will place the University of Ghana as one of the most advanced medical training institutions in West Africa and Africa as a whole.  He added that it will be a Centre of excellence for not only providing quality health care but also for advanced medical training for health personnel.

The President urged those who would be managing and working at the hospital after the inauguration, to ensure a proper management and maintenance system so that the money invested in the project will not be in vain.  He commended the contractors for the quality of work which has been done so far and promised to address all challenges which are being faced.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, thanked the President for all the sacrifices that led to securing the funds for the construction of the medical centre. He expressed his excitement at the opportunity to have such a state-of the-art medical centre at the University of Ghana, indicating that since 1965, the University has been discussing ways to setting up such a facility.

Prof. Ernest Aryeetey hoped that when completed, the facility would serve people of Ghana and transform the way health professionals are trained in the country.

The Minister of Health, Dr. Alex Segbefia noted that the construction of the hospital demonstrates government’s commitment to the delivery of quality health service.  He was hopeful that the deadlines for the completion of the hospital will be met.

Earlier, the Project Coordinator, Prof. Aaron Lawson, gave a brief overview of the project and introduced members of the Project team present. The members of the Project Team are Mr. Raichard Vanderpuye  (Project Manager), Mr. Peter Abalansah (Project Quantity Surveyor), Mr. Julius Ayivor (Project Resident Representative), Mr. Mike Eghan (Project Electrical Engineer), Mr. Michael Addo (Project Mechanical Engineer), Mr. Michael Owusu-Ansah (Project Accountant), Dr. Nichodemus Gebe (Project Biomedical Engineer), and Mrs. Erica Cudjoe and Ms. Betty Naaoh (Project Secretaries).

The Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa and Mrs. Bernice Tamakloe (Project Administrator),were also present.

A former Minister of Health, Mr. Rojo Mettle-Nunoo who played a vital role in the early beginnings of the project was also present at the briefing ceremony.
