Notice of Death - Professor Daniel Adzei Bekoe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana

The families of Nii Klu Din We, and Atreakor We, of Teshie Awuletey and Randolf of Osu; have informed the University of the passing of Professor Daniel Adzei Bekoe, former Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, on Saturday, 5th September, 2020.

Professor Daniel Adzei Bekoe was the second Ghanaian to be appointed Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Professor Bekoe attended Achimota School from 1943 to 1948 and proceeded to the then University College of the Gold Coast (now University of Ghana) where he was awarded the degree of BSc (Special) in Chemistry (London) in 1953. He was the University College’s first student to graduate with a First-Class honours degree in the BSc (Special) Chemistry programme. He later enrolled at the University of Oxford and was awarded a DPhil in Chemical Crystallography (Oxon) in 1957.

Upon graduation from Oxford, Professor Bekoe joined the University as a Lecturer in the Department of Chemistry in 1958. He was promoted to the rank of Senior Lecturer in 1963, Associate Professor in 1965 and Professor of Chemistry in 1974.

He served as Dean of the then Faculty of Science from 1971 to 1974 and concurrently as Pro Vice-Chancellor from 1972 to 1975.

Professor Adzei Bekoe was appointed Vice-Chancellor for an initial period of five years from 1st January, 1976 to 30th September,1981. He was re-appointed for a second term of five years; however, Professor Bekoe resigned from the position on 30th September, 1983, when he took voluntary retirement from the service of the University.

During his academic career at the University, Prof Bekoe served as a Member and also President of the Ghana Science Association, Fellow and also Vice-President of the Ghana Academy of Arts and Sciences, Treasurer and later Vice-President of the International Council of Scientific Unions, Member of the Council of the United Nations University, and Fellow of the Chemical Society, London.

The University has been informed that his burial will take place on Saturday, 3rd October, 2020. Additional information will be shared with the community when this is received.

The University mourns with the wife, children and family of Professor Daniel Adzei Bekoe. May the soul of our former Vice-Chancellor Rest in Perfect Peace.
