Management Embarks on off Campus Retreat

The Office of the Vice-Chancellor organised a weekend retreat from 2nd to 4th December 2021 at the Volta Serene Hotel to discuss the Vice-Chancellor’s six Key Strategic Objectives (KSOs) in addition to the inception report from University of Ghana Pursuit of Excellence Taskforce (UG- POET) and notes gathered from the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo’s road shows.

The retreat was attended by Prof. Felix Asante, Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Research Innovation and Development; Prof. Daniel Frimpong Ofori, Acting Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Students and Academic Affairs and Provost, College of Humanities and Mrs. Emelia Agyei-Mensah, Registrar.

The other participants of the retreat were Prof. Julius Fobil, Provost, College of Health Sciences; Prof. Boateng Onwona-Agyeman, Provost, College of Basic and Applied Sciences; Prof. Martin Oteng-Ababio, Acting Provost, College of Education; Prof. Olivia Anku-Tsede, Legal Counsel; Mr. Francis Kwabena Boachie, Chief Information Technology Officer as well as selected academic and administrative Deans and Directors.

Addressing participants at the retreat, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, reiterated her vision “to create a culture that promotes research, teaching and learning, administrative processes and extension activities driven by technology and anchored in humanism.” Prof. Amfo also shared her KSOs which she said could be achieved through 3Rs – reflect, restrategise and relaunch. The KSOs, according to the Vice-Chancellor, are to reinvigorate impactful research; develop technology-driven and robust processes; strengthen traditional revenue streams and expand alternative income sources; lead a vibrant and responsive governance and management system; increase UG’s visibility and create a sense of ownership and commitment among students, faculty, staff and alumni.

Prof. Paul Zeleza, Outgoing Vice-Chancellor, United States International University Africa and Dr. Mabouba Diagne, Vice President, ECOWAS Bank for Investment and Development (EBID) who were guest participants delivered presentations on Leading and Managing a 21st Century University and Fundraising, income generation and safeguarding University of Ghana’s finances respectively.

Prof. Zeleza emphasised the changing dynamics in higher education which is a major reason why universities ought to pay attention to lifelong learning. ‘This entails developing multigenerational, multidisciplinary, multimodal, and multifocal education that seamlessly combines the classroom, campus, community and work as intersected and integrated learning spaces’, Prof. Zeleza said. In Dr. Diagne’s presentation, he showcased how the University of Ghana could raise alternative innovative financing or explore public-private partnership to fund its activities.

A Cross-Section of Management during the Retreat

Participants of the retreat were put into five groups to discuss assigned components of the Vice-Chancellor’s vision, internalise and outline specific actions to attain the vision. In addition, Central Administration and each College was tasked to outline targets and define strategies or actions and resources, including responsibilities required to deliver on key issues impacting on University of Ghana’s ability to attain its strategic objectives. After these assignments, there were plenary sessions to discuss reports from the groups.

The retreat ended on Saturday, 4th December, 2021, with the participants charged with greater determination to serve the University.
