The Department of Family and Consumer Sciences has received a donation of two industry sewing machines from the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST) at a brief ceremony at the Department’s Conference room. The donation was to seal a collaboration between the Institute and the Department.

In brief remarks, Prof. George Oduro Nkansah, Director, IAST, noted that the machines, which came from Geoquaye Company Limited, one of their industry stakeholders, were donated to help students stand out when they go out for internships. He added that with these machines enhancing the practical aspect of their studies, the students will be better equipped to start their own businesses or become entrepreneurs. Prof. Oduro Nkansah encouraged all students to take advantage of these machines by engaging in practical lessons during their free time. He also urged members of the Department to come out with initiatives to make the Department more visible.

Dr. Efua Vandyck, a Senior Lecturer at the Department, in a speech delivered on behalf of the Head of Department, debunked the assertion that the study of Family and Consumer Sciences is for students who are vacuous in academics. She emphasised that the study of Family and Consumer Sciences requires theoretical learning for practical application. Dr. Vandyck thanked IAST for their munificent support.

In brief remarks, Dr. Henry Sintim, Research Fellow, IAST, suggested that the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences creates and names the storage space for the machines and practical lessons, ‘Maker Space Hub’.

There was an exhibition of handmade clothing and accessories by students of the Department of Family and Consumer Sciences.
