HRODD Holds Training Programme for Security Personnel of the University

The Human Resource and Organisational Development Directorate (HRODD) as part of efforts to improve security on the University’s campuses has begun a training programme for all security personnel of the University of Ghana. The training programme is scheduled to run for 5 weeks. Facilitators were drawn from the 5th Infantry Battalion, Burma Camp, Operation Calm Life and members of the Security Committee of the University of Ghana.

Prior to the commencement of each training session, security personnel participated in physical training as a means of warming-up for the day’s activities.

Mr. Daniel Baidoo, Director, HRODD in his welcome address indicated that the essence of the training was to equip security personnel of the University with the requisite skills, right ethics and strategic ways of dealing with security on the University’s campuses.

Speaking on intelligence gathering, Prof. Martin Oteng-Ababio, Chairman of the Security Committee, indicated that the importance of intelligence gathering is to provide accurate and meaningful information as well as insights to help inform decision making.  He noted that security intelligence was very essential as it directs the formulation of national security policies and promotes safety for all.

Highlighting the duties of Security Personnel, Prof. Oteng-Ababio noted that security personnel and systems are to help maintain law and order, protect life and property and to help prevent and detect crime. He charged the security personnel to be abreast of the current trends in security management in order to enhance provision of security.

As part of the training, the security personnel were educated on topics such as The Security and the University Community, Operational Duties, Ethics, Code of Conduct for Security Guards, Customer Service, Static Guards Duty, Roadblocks and Vehicle Searches.

In his closing remarks, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ebenezer Oduro Owusu expressed his appreciation to the Security Guards for making time to attend the workshop. He also encouraged them to stay away from smoking, sleeping under trees, idling about, chatting, excessive intake of alcohol while on duty to enable their brains work faster.

He further charged all present to work with integrity and diligence. It was also his expectation that there will be a change in the attitude of the personnel in terms of work attitude once school reopens.

Approximately, 570 Security personnel will participate in the training programme.
