Dr. Gordon Awandare receives 2015 Royal Society Pfizer Early Career Award

Dr. Gordon Awandare, Head of the Department of Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology has been awarded the 2015 Royal Society Pfizer Early Career Award. The Award is in recognition of his achievements in Molecular and Cellular Studies of Malaria, including how Malaria parasites invade red blood cells and cause disease.

Dr. Awandare, is also Centre Leader for the Africa Centre of Excellence for Cell Biology and Infectious Pathogens hosted jointly by the Department of Biochemistry and Cell and Molecular Biologyand the Noguchi Memorial Institute for Medical Research. He led the team to develop one of the winning proposals for the establishment of a World Bank funded African Centre of Excellence (ACE) for Cell Biology and Infectious Pathogens.

In July 2014, the University of Ghana conferred on him the Distinguished Award for Meritorious Service, an award he jointly received with Prof. Eric Danquah, Director of the West African Centre for Crop Improvement (WACCI). The award was in recognition of his immense contribution to research and scholarship in the University and in acknowledgment of your potential in the years ahead.

The Royal Society is a self-governing Fellowship of many of the world’s most distinguished scientists drawn from all areas of Science, Engineering, and Medicine. The Society’s fundamental purpose, as it has been since its foundation in 1660, is to recognise, promote, and support excellence in Science and to encourage the development and use of Science for the benefit of humanity.

The Early Career Award is presented to a research scientist showing exceptional promise, but at an earlier stage of his or her career, usually having received their PhD within the last 20 years.
