Commonwealth Hall Holds Awards Night For Students

Prof. George Armah, Master of Commonwealth Hall

12 students of Commonwealth Hall of the University of Ghana have received awards at a student awards night and dinner held at the conference theatre of the hall. The awards which were in the form of cash prizes, citations and certificates were for academic excellence, sports, public spiritedness, most active student vandal and needy but brilliant students.

Prof. George Armah, Master of the Hall, chaired the occasion.  In his remarks, he congratulated the award winners and added that the awards are the Hall’s way of appreciating the hard work and effort of students. He encouraged students in the Hall to as much as possible, leave a mark in the Hall for which they will be remembered, honoured and recognized.

Dr. James Adomako, Dean of Student Affairs

The Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. James Adomako who was at the event also congratulated the award winners, especially those who had combined academic work and sports and still managed to excel in both areas. He urged other students to emulate the examples set by the awardees.

Mr. Nii Bekoe Tackie, Senior Tutor of Commonwealth Hall

The Senior Tutor of the Hall, Mr. Nii Bekoe Tackie, challenged the current JCR leadership and all other students to be diligent with their academic work. He paid tribute to the late Prof. Kwadwo Assenso-Okyere, who was a Master of the Hall and a former Vice-Chancellor of the University, for his contribution to the Hall in particular and the University as a whole.

Mr. Isaac Nketia Sarpong, National Vice-President of Old Vandals Association

The National Vice-President of the Old Vandals Association, Mr. Isaac Nketia Sarpong urged the students to join the Association on completion of their courses at the University. He congratulated the award winners and urged them to continue to uphold the good name of the hall.

Mr. Felix Addo, speaking on behalf of the benefactors

One of the benefactors, Mr. Felix Addo of Price Water House Coopers, advised the students to learn to contribute to development projects without expecting anything in return. He also urged students in the hall to be well-behaved and correct the impression that being a Vandal means one is a rascal.

Mr. Seth Asampana, Commonwealth hall JCR president

The JCR president of the Hall, Mr. Seth Asampana in brief remarks, entreated his colleagues to cultivate the habit of sacrifice and work hard, and make a difference in society.

Collins Agyapong, speaking on behalf of the award winners

One of the award winners, Collins Agyapong, on behalf of his colleagues expressed his gratitude to the hall for organizing the event. He recounted some of his experiences on campus especially the challenge of being part of the first batch to be introduced to the new grading system and also combining extra-curricular activities with academic work.

The award winners were Felix Amenorhu (Harry Baiden award for Best Bachelor of Arts Student), Bill Kwaku Ansah Inkoom (K.K. Apeadu award for Best BSc. Student), Collins Agyapong (Kwame Asante award for Best Level 400 student in BSc. Administration), Amoah Samuel Antwi (Kwesi Essel Koomson award for Best student in BSc Administration), Asare Frank Adu (Kwadwo Asenso-Okyere award for Best level 400 Student in Agricultural Economics), Mohammed Shaibu (Felix Addo award for Best Level 400 student in Accounting), Akuka Wiliams A. (Edusei Derkyir award for Best Cross Country Runner), Tetteh Vincent Osieku (Harry Baiden award for Best Athlete), Yegbe Amos Dela (Isaac Nketia Sarpong award for the Most Active student Vandal), Asante Okyere Michael (Harry Baiden award for Most Public Spirited Student) and finally, Nartey Emmanuel Naatei (Alhaji Razak El-Alawa award for Brilliant Needy Student).

Earlier in the programme, a one-minute silence was observed for the late Prof. Kwadwo Assenso-Okyere, former Vice-Chancellor of the University and a former Hall Master of Commonwealth Hall.
