College Of Humanities Launches Book On The Social Sciences

The College of Humanities has launched a book titled, “Changing Perspectives on the Social Sciences”. The book, which was edited by Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Prof. Joseph Atsu Ayee and Ms. Abena D. Oduro, is the first compilation of its kind that brings together discussions of the evolution of scholarship in different disciplines of the Social Sciences.

Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey, in his welcome address, stated that one of the marks of a world-class university is the quality of its research publications. He lauded the editors and contributors for their effort and urged other Schools and Colleges to undertake such projects.

The Provost of the College of Humanities, Professor Samuel Agyei-Mensah, who is also one of the editors, gave an overview of the book. He noted that the publication was put together with the aim of presenting in one volume, a comprehensive multidisciplinary collection of papers on the changing dynamics of the Social Sciences in Ghana. It further seeks to provide a broader perspective from which to view the evolution, theory, methods, substance and policy relevance over time of each of the social science disciplines and their multiple interfaces. It additionally offers distinct perspectives for comparing and appreciating the synergies, differences, trends and nuances among and between the Social Science disciplines in Ghana, in a holistic and scholarly manner.

Professor Ivan Addae-Mensah, a former Vice-Chancellor of the University, gave a thorough and humour-filled review of selected chapters of the book.Written by experts in the various fields, the 15 chapters span the disciplines of Archaeology and Heritage Studies; History; Geography; Psychology; Sociology; Anthropology;  Social Work; Economics; Political Science; International Affairs; Information Studies; Communication Studies; African Studies; Development Studies; Women’s and Gender Studies; and Adult and Continuing Education.

The event, which was held at the auditorium of the School of Law, was attended by the Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel Ashia, Pro-Vice Chancellor (Academic and Student Affairs), faculty, students, members of the Diplomatic Corps and the media.
