College of Health Sciences Faculty Meet Management of University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC)

 Management and Faculty of the College of Health Sciences have met with Management of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC) to discuss the modalities to get the College of Health Sciences deeply involved in the operations of the Medical Centre.

Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Rev. Professor Patrick F. Ayeh-Kumi in his opening remarks recalled that there had been series of engagements on how the University was going to be involved in the running of the Medical Centre. He noted that there was a partnership agreement between the state and the University on the running of the facility. He recounted that a Committee was formed to come up with modalities to get the College of Health Sciences to help make the facility functional.

Speaking to the Report of a Committee that was set up to consider the College’s involvement in the operations of the Medical Centre, the Project Coordinator and former Provost of the College of Health Sciences, Professor Aaron Lawson indicated that the Committee was formed to collate views on how the College and the University could be involved in the operations of the University of Ghana Medical Centre (UGMC). He added that the College was requested to present the names of Senior Members who were expected to be engaged at the UGMC for service, training and research. Discussing how staff of the College could be assigned to the Medical Centre and still pursue theiracademic career path with the University, Prof. Lawson indicated that most of the staff would like to remain with the University while operating at the UGMC; however a few Senior Members had expressed the willingness to make UGMC their primary place of work, he noted.

He disclosed that the facility’s 650 bed capacity could accommodate all final year students of the College together with Final Part 1 students of the Medical and Dental Schools on a rotational basis. On how research by staff of the College could be conducted at the facility, Prof. Lawson noted that the Dean of School of Biomedical and Allied Health Sciences had written a proposal for the consideration of the UGMC Management on the establishment of a Research Directorate at the UGMC. The Management of the facility was studying the proposal for further and necessary action.

Professor Lawson stated that it was the responsibility of the Management of the Medical Centre to liaise with the respective accreditation agencies to ensure that the facility was accredited for student training. He pointed out that the UGMC’s state of the art Simulation Centre was one of the best in Africa with its establishment as a long-term investment in medical education which presents a clear opportunity for a world-class pre-service training.

Speaking on the remuneration packages for the College of Health Sciences faculty who will render service at the facility, Dr. Ernest Yorke in his report noted that the draft consisted of the best practices of out-patient services which will be on commission bases. He disclosed that other non-monetary benefits such as opportunities for further studies forms part of the remuneration package.

Present at the meeting were the Ag. Chief Executive Officer of the UGMC, Dr. Darius Osei, the Medical Director of the Centre, Dr. Kwame Anim-Boamah and some faculty members of the College of Health Sciences.  The meeting was among several meetings that had been held between the two groups.
