College of Basic and Applied Sciences Inaugurates Advisory Board

An Advisory Board for the College of Basic and Applied Sciences (CBAS) has been inaugurated by the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey. The Board has as its Chairperson, Dr. Percival Alfred Kuranchie, an Agricultural Economist and former Chief Executive Officer of the National Investment Bank Limited and the Chairman of the Board of Directors of Ghana COCOBOD and Nestle (Ghana) Limited.Dr. Kuranchie who was appointed by the University Council is currently a member of the Council of State.

 

The other members are Prof. E. O. Owusu, Provost, CBAS; Prof. R.D. Baeta, representing the University Council; Prof. K. Tano-Debrah, representing the College Academic Board, Alhaji Y. Iddrisu , representing Alumni; Mr. B.N. Mensah, representingthe SRC and Ms. Rosina Nyarko

representing Staff.

 

The others are Dr. S.O. Onwona a retired official of the African Development Bank (ADB), Mr. S.D.E.K. Anku, Director/Technical Advisor at the EPA Training School, Accra, Mr. A.O. Amankwah, Commercial and Finance Director at Smice International, Ms. Otema Yirenkyi, Country Manager for Microsoft Ghana, Mrs. Isabella Mansa Agra, Acting Deputy Chief Executive and Head of Food Inspection Division of the Food and Drugs Authority of the Ministry of Health, and Dr. Rose E.M. Entsua-Mensah, Deputy Director-General of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

 

 

The Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ernest Aryeetey noted that with the proliferation of public Universities as well as private degree awarding Institutions, coupled with the planned upgrade of Polytechnics in Ghana into Universities, the tertiary education landscape would continue to change. It was therefore incumbent on the University of Ghana to adopt a new strategy to enable it compete favourably in the new tertiary education terrain. He therefore charged the Advisory Board to guide the CBAS to upscale its research output more than any place else and help the UG become a major institution for research.

 

Prof. Aryeetey expressed his gratitude to the Chairman and members for accepting to serve on the Advisory Board. He noted that the membership of the Advisory Board was carefully selected because of their contributions to society, expertise and achievements.

The Chairman of the Advisory Board, Dr. Percival Kuranchie expressed his appreciation to the Vice-Chancellor and the University Council for reposing confidence in them by appointing them to the Advisory Board of CBAS.He acknowledged the positive changes that had occurred in the University over the past six years and congratulated the Vice-Chancellor and the University Council for braving the odds to go fully collegiate.Dr. Kuranchie expressed confidence in the Board and expressed the hope that with the collective experience and expertise of the members, and with the support of the University, the Board would be capable of pulling CBAS forward.

 

On behalf of the members, Dr. Sam Onwona, a member of the Board indicated that they were happy to have the opportunity to serve the University of Ghana. He drew a similarity between what the University of Ghana is seeking to do in its strategic plan and what the University of Guelph, Canada did some years ago to become a comprehensive research University. He recommended the creation of an industrial park on campus and refocusing on industry-led research.

Per statutory provisions, the College Advisory Boards are required to guide the College to develop strategies to achieve its strategic intentions, consider proposals from School Management Committees, foster effective links with the external communities and help to maintain and enhance the image and reputation of the College as well as its sustainability.
