Centre for Ageing Studies Marks United Nations International Day of Older Persons

The Centre for Ageing Studies, on Thursday, 30th September, 2021, held a press conference at its Conference Room to commemorate the United Nations International Day of Older Persons which is annually marked on 1st October. The theme for this year’s celebration was digital equity for all ages”. 

Addressing the media, Professor Mavis Dako-Gyeke, Director of the Centre, discussed issues ranging from Ageism and Human Rights, Sustainable Development, Access and Literacy, Cybersecurity and Ethics and Accountability. She emphasised that these issues were critical to the well-being of older people, hence, there was the need for mandated institutions to put in place appropriate measures to enhance the capacities of older people to thrive in this era of digitalization.

Professor Dako-Gyeke further appealed to the government and parliament of Ghana to pay urgent attention to the Aged Persons’ Bill and expedite its passage into law. She also encouraged the youth to give kind consideration to older persons in all their activities and offer them the requisite support.

Members of the Centre’s Management Committee who were present at the press conference were Dr. Akosua Agyemang (Senior Lecturer, Department of Social Work and Centre for Ageing Studies) and Reverend Dr. Samuel Ayete-Nyampong (Pastoral Gerontologist and Lecturer, Trinity Theological Seminary).
