Balme Library Holds Exhibition In Honour Of Mr Kofi Annan Chancellor (2008-2018)

An exhibition was opened today at the University’s Balme Library as part of activities to celebrate and honour the life of Mr. Kofi Annan, former Chancellor of the University of Ghana (2008-2018).

The exhibition which showcases pictures depicting Mr. Annan’s service to the world particularly, including the University and his odyssey through life was put together by the Balme Library, in collaboration with the University’s Public Affairs Directorate and the United Nations Information Centre.

In introductory remarks, the University Librarian, Prof. Perpetua Dadzie eulogized Mr. Annan and recounted how Mr. Annan was instrumental in attracting several funding sources and projects to the University. She noted that Balme Library benefited from a US$2 million grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York, which Mr. Annan facilitated.  She said the fund was used to establish and equip the Commons – the Knowledge and Research Commons for undergraduate and post graduate students of the University.

Speaking at the exhibition, the Vice-Chancellor Prof. Ebenezer Oduro-Owusu, re-emphasized Kofi Annan’s tireless efforts in ensuring that the University maintained its world class status. He stated that Mr. Kofi Annan was a great asset to the University of Ghana and the world at large therefore he deserved all the activities the University has arranged for him and even more.  At his request, a minute’s silence was observed in memory of the former Chancellor.

The tape to unveil the exhibition was jointly cut by the Vice-Chancellor and Madam Cynthia Prah, National Information Officer, United Nations Information Centre.  Mrs. Theodocia Adanu from the Balme Library conducted officials and guests round the exhibition.

Present at the exhibition were the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, (ASA) Prof. Kwame Offei, Prof. Patrick Ayeh-Kumi, Prof. Samuel Agyei-Mensah, Prof. Daniel Asiedu and Prof. Michael Tagoe, Provosts of the College of Health Sciences, Humanities, Basic and Applied Sciences and Education respectively, Registrar, Mrs. Mercy Haizel-Ashia, Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, staff of the Balme Library and media institutions were at the brief ceremony. 

Meanwhile, the mortal remains of the former Chancellor will arrive in Accra for funeral arrangements and accorded a state burial.
