2017 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecturer Calls on Vice-President

Dr. Kandeh Yumkella, 2017 Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial Lecturer called on the Vice President of the Republic of Ghana, Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia during the period he was in Ghana.

He was accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Philomena Yumkella and Personal Advisor, Ms. Duni Hebron, and the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ebenezer Oduro Owusu, the Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Student Affairs, Prof. Kwame Offei, Director of Public Affairs, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa and Ms. Eccles Andoh, Assistant Registrar, Public Affairs.

In welcoming the delegation to his office, Vice President Bawumia said he was particularly happy that the University provided such a platform for scholarly lecturers which enables distinguished lecturers to contribute to social and economic discourse, while sensitizing the public.  He wished Dr. Yumkella well in his endeavours and thanked the University for making the visit possible.

The Vice Chancellor wished Dr. Bawumia well in his office as Vice President and said that the University is desirous to work closely with government as a stakeholder of the University, to promote national development.  

On behalf of the University, Mrs. Stella A. Amoa, Director of Public Affairs, presented the Vice President with some publications of the University, and noted that even though Dr. Bawumia was not an alumnus of the University, the University is desirous to cultivate a relationship with him in the category of “Friends of the University of Ghana”. 

Dr. Yumkella delivered a two-day captivating lecture series on the platform of the annual Aggrey-Fraser-Guggisberg Memorial lectures on the theme: Africa:  A Continent of Hope, Opportunity and Transformation.  Two other topics, Challenges for Energy Transitions and Transforming Africa’s Agriculture and Agribusiness also formed part of his lectures.

Dr. Yumkella was conferred with an Honorary Degree of Doctor of Law, honoris causa, after the lectures.

The University delegation later called on the Chief of Staff, Mrs. Akosua Frema Opare, former MP of Ayawaso West Wuogon, which is the constituency the University of Ghana Legon Campus is located.
