About Lecturer
Prof. David Dodoo-Arhin is currently a Professor (Full) of Materials Science and Engineering and the Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology (IAST): An Institute in the University of Ghana which serves as a platform for the transfer of knowledge, technology and innovation developed at the University to industry and communities.
Prof. David Dodoo-Arhin had his secondary school education at the St. Augustine’s College, Cape Coast, Ghana in 1994 and had his professional Teacher training at the Foso Training College (Foso College of Education) at Assin Foso, Ghana in 1998. He Holds a BSc degree in Physics and post-graduate Diploma in Science Education (PGDE) from the University of Cape Coast, Ghana (2004, & 2010). He then worked at the Department of Physics, University of Cape Coast as a Teaching assistant and chief research assistant.
He obtained his PhD degree in Materials Engineering from the Department of Materials Engineering and Industrial Technologies, University of Trento-Italy in 2010 with particular focus on nanostructured Oxides for energy and Environmental applications under the supervision of Prof. Paolo Scardi and Matteo Leoni.
He was appointed a lecturer in 2011, Senior Lecturer (2014), Associate Professor (2018), and Professor [Full] (2021). He was the Head of the Department of Materials Science and Engineering (2014 to 2016), the Ag. Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology from 1st August 2016-31st December 2016.and currently the Director of the Institute of Applied Science and Technology of the University of Ghana from 1st August 2022.
In 2011, he undertook a postdoctoral research fellowship in Graphene for Photovoltaic applications at the Institute of Applied Materials in the Department of Physics at the University of Pretoria, South Africa. In 2013, Prof. Dodoo-Arhin was awarded a Postdoctoral Fellowship to conduct research in Graphene based dye sensitized solar cells with the Nanomaterials and Spectroscopy group (Cambridge Graphene Centre) at the University of Cambridge- UK in collaboration with Dr. Tawfique Hasan under the Cambridge Africa Partnership for Research Excellence (CAPREx) programme. In 2014 he continued his research collaboration at the Nanoscience Centre of the Cambridge University, UK. In 2016, he undertook a research visit to the Department of Pure and Applied Chemistry, University of Strathclyde under the royal society organic photovoltaics capacity building programme. He has been a visiting academic at the University of Strathclyde (UK), University of Cambridge (UK), Université de Poitiers (France) and the RAPSODEE centre- Ecole des Mines d’Albi-Carmaux (France) working on plastic waste processing to fuels.
In February 2017, he was awarded a fellow of the Africa Science Leadership programme: a new initiative of the University of Pretoria and the Global Young Academy, with the aim of growing mid-career African academics in the areas of thought leadership, team management and research development, with the intention of enabling them to contribute to the development of a new paradigm for science in Africa, focused on its contribution to solving the complex issues facing both Africa and the global community. He was also awarded the InterAcademy Partnership Science Advice for policy fellowship at the International Science Council Regional office for Africa (2019). He was the Programs coordinator of the 2019 joint Pan African Conference on Crystallography (PCCr2) and African Light Source conference.
He is also the University of Ghana Node Coordinator for the RISE-SIG African Materials Science and Engineering Network (RISE-AMSEN). He is a member of several professional bodies, editorial board member of the Elsevier journal of Progress in Natural Science: Materials International (PNS:MI), reviewer of several local and international journals, MSc and PhD external examiner for Universities in Ghana and South Africa, MSc and PhD supervisor.
