AQUAHEM PROJECT

Position: PhD Scholarship

Location: Norway, Ghana & Nigeria

Application Deadline: 29th July 2022.

PARTNER UNIVERSITIES

The University of Ghana (UG), Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), University for Development Studies (UDS) and the University of Lagos (UNILAG) in collaboration with the University of Life Sciences (NMBU) and the Norwegian Veterinary Institute (NVI) are offering a unique learning opportunity for motivated graduate students for 3-4 year duration to contribute to a regional project on Aquatic and Environmental Health research and education to support sustainable aquaculture in West Africa.

Background

Aquaculture in West Africa is growing rapidly with the Nile tilapia and African catfish as the two most important farmed fish species. There is the need for more research attention and investments in the sector for better understanding of the culture environment, disease epidemiology and control mechanisms in these cultured fish groups, and the safety of the fish as food for consumers. With increased intensification and resultant proliferation of fish diseases, it has become relevant to build better aquatic and environmental health research capacity to support sustainable development of aquaculture in the sub-region.

Capacity building in aquatic and environmental health (AQUAHEM) is a regional project funded by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation – NORAD. Under this project, 8 PhD students will be enrolled 4 at NMBU and 4 in the West African partner universities (1 each at UG, KNUST, UDS and UNILAG) with unique opportunity to be trained by regional and international experts.
