What do I expect when arriving at the airport in Accra?

You will be transported from the plane to the airport terminal where you will then go through immigration procedures. This just involves standing in line and answering a few questions from the officials. You will then collect your bags from the baggage area and go through customs. You will be asked a few questions from the officials there also. You should not be asked to pay any fees etc. You will then follow everyone to exit the airport where ISEP representatives will be waiting for you with an “ISEP” sign.

There may be guys around offering to ‘help’ you with your bags. You won’t need any help. It is a very short distance out to the exit of the airport. These guys will expect dollars, as they know that you won’t have any local money upon arrival. If you allow them to ‘help’ you, they will expect payment once you are outside – so please make it clear to them that you do not need help.

How do I know which classes are available?

The University of Ghana does not publish bulletins each semester showing availability of classes. Instead, you should first refer to the Univ. of Ghana Handbooks, which lists all classes for each department in the University. Odd number classes for the first semester and even number classes for the second semester. Not all classes will be offered each semester, so you still must go to each department and see what is actually being offered and register for classes in the department.

How do I register for classes with the University of Ghana?

You must register in each department you want to take a class in. In addition you must register with the office of the Dean of International Educational Programmes. Forms for this process are available through the ISEP office. Registration is not complete unless you register in the department and with the Dean’s office. The ISEP office also has additional forms for you to complete, which will be given to you during registration.

How do I drop or add classes?

You must go to the department by the deadline date and fill out appropriate forms for the department. All deadline dates are posted in the ISEP office and on the Hostel Bulletin Boards. This information is also provided to you in your orientation packets.

What if I want to do an independent study?

You must provide a preliminary outline and proposal with a bibliography for approval by your home school. The ISEP Director will help you identify a supervisor.

Can I leave early (before exams are over) to travel?

No. The University of Ghana exam schedule should be published by mid-semester in all student dorms and dates must be adhered to strictly.

What if sickness will prevent me from taking a scheduled exam?

You must alert the ISEP Director immediately either in person or by telephone or email. If you are too sick to come to the study center, make sure your roommate or friend contacts the Director or study center staff. If you go to the hospital, make sure you get a note from the doctor showing that you are under his/her care for illness. Failure to do this may result in your not being allowed to make-up the examination.

What is an acceptable reason for re-scheduling exams?

It is only sickness (mental or physical), which may warrant rescheduling of an exam. Even then it is not an easy process to complete. Proof would have to be provided by a medical officer before this option is considered and the request would have to be approved by the Dean of International Programmes, the Academic Registrar and the lecturer.

If I have two exams scheduled for the same day and time what do I do?

If you have registered for courses according to the guidelines given during orientation this will not happen. Make sure you check the exam schedule as soon as it comes out (by mid-term). In case you do have a conflict, you should alert the ISEP Director immediately. It will still be your responsibility to report this to the office of the academic registrar so that your examination will be re-scheduled.

How do I do my Laundry?

This can be fun if you do it yourself at the open bays available for this purpose in the halls. It’s best and less stressful when done on days when other friends also do theirs, the little chitchat and gossip that goes with it makes it more relaxing and fun. There are however commercial places in each hall that do laundry for a fee. “Any work boys” as they are called can also be used, but we do not encourage this practice as there have been several cases reported where it was found that these ‘boys’ were accomplices in burglary etc. in the dorms.

What about transportation into town?

The school is fortunate to have strategic routes linking it to the main city centers. Depending on the traffic situation during the day, you can easily get access to commercial vehicles (cabs or buses or trotros) to the main city centers or wherever your destination is. You should avoid rush hours so that you don’t have stand in line too long for transportation.

Where can I shop?

A short walking distance from the International Students Hostel is the Manciples. This is the campus grocery store.

The main facility on campus that sees to these needs is the central cafeteria. This is a small complex with a restaurant, a laundry, a salon and barbering shop, a stationary and gift shop, a grocery store, and a secretarial service provider.

Another alternative is the “Bush Canteen” on campus. You will be shown this place during orientation. Everything from electronics to foodstuffs can be bought there.

There is also a small open shopping area adjacent to hostel where you will be staying. You can buy cooked and uncooked foods there. The Accra Mall also has a cluster of shops with everything you can imagine from groceries to appliances. Some of the well-known shops you can find there are GAME, SHOPRITE, WOODIN, MR PRICE AND MANY MORE. It is located at the Tetteh Quashie Roundabout, about 10mins drive from campus.

The Madina market is the biggest and closest to the campus, but the main city shopping center at Makola has everything one can imagine.

Which student services are available?

Each department has a head assigned to them. Course advisors who are lecturers in the department are assigned to each student to advise them in a particular field.

Other extra-curricular enquiries can be made at designated offices such as the counseling and placement center etc.

Other special arms of the school are always standing ready to see to purely students’ needs such as the Student Representative Council (SRC) and JCR Executives of the various halls. Photocopying of study materials, telephoning and Internet facilities, dinning halls where a variety of both local and foreign dishes are served, gift shops etc are available in each hall of residence.

The university also has a bookshop, library, hospital and pharmacy shop available on campus.

What Immigration procedures must I follow?

The ISEP Resident Director will give the forms to you. Processing of the forms takes some time (around three weeks) so it is advisable to hand in all necessary forms, documents and fees required at the ISEP office immediately in order to begin processing as early as possible. You cannot travel out of the country until you have gone through this process.

Can I cash my Travelers Cheques in Ghana?

We do not recommend bringing Traveler’s Cheques as cashing these can be burdensome.
