1948 - Founded as University College of the Gold Coast affiliated to the University of London
1957 - Became University College of Ghana on attainment of political independence in 1957
1961 - Became an autonomous University by an Act of Parliament to award own degrees.

Principal Officers
The Chancellor serves as the Head of the University and by virtue of his/her office is a member of the University Council and Convocation.
The Chairman of Council acts in the absence of the Chancellor and presides at the meetings of the University Council.
As the Chief Executive Officer, the Vice-Chancellor is responsible for providing the strategic direction of the University and for driving the growth and development of the University as defined b y Council.
