ESSS 601 Fundamentals of Sanitation Sciences
Public Health basis of sanitation, water, waste and disease. Introduction to water and health, waste management and health. Introduction to epidemiology, basic parasitology, microbiology, biochemistry and entomology. Environmental pollution, air, water and soil. Climate: Hydrology, drainage, temperature, humidity etc. Introduction to town planning. Policy development, private/public sector roles, financing arrangements, role of municipal authorities and design and operation of services.
ESSS 602 Water Supply, Utilization and Health
Water supply and Health, Water supply systems and source selection, Water supply service levels, Community and Urban water supply. Risk behaviours in relation to water and excreta, Hygiene Education.
ESSS 603 Community Management of Water Supply
Introduction to low-cost water supply and sanitation in rural communities, small towns, peri-urban areas and urban slum. Water sources, supply systems, emergency water supply and sanitation, source selection, water supply service levels. Social and economic aspects of water management, drinking water quality management, GIS and data management. Community management institutional arrangements.

Water storage methods and mechanisms, Household treatment of water, and Small scale water treatment methods.
ESSS 605 Waste Management: Principles and Practice
Introduction of concept of waste generation as normal bi-product of human living processes and economic development. Public Health importance of waste management. Characteristics of wastes. Classification of wastes and sources. Technologies for storage, collection, treatment and final disposal. Definition of roles of Stakeholders (households, institutions and local authorities). Regulations and their enforcement for development and maintenance of healthful environment.
ESSS 606 Environmental Health Policy, Legislation and Institutional Arrangements for Sanitation
Introduction of Concept of Policy, Legislation and Institutional arrangements as administrative instruments for making interventions and achieving goals. Review of local and international policies and legislation: Policies, legislation, ordinances, bye-laws of Ghana, WHO/UNEP policies and guidelines, etc. Review of national institutional structures and their roles in promotion of sanitation.
ESSS 607 Basic Principles of Home, Community, Town and District planning of Sustainable Waste Management
Delineation of essential components of development plans for waste management for various service levels: Home, Community, Town and District. Delineation of linkages between the service levels from the Home to the District; Considerations of the linkages in design of comprehensive district sustainable waste management plan. Definition of roles of Stakeholders (households, institutions, local government agencies, etc.). Regulations for promotion of good practices in the management of waste.
ESSS 608 Sanitation and Communicable Disease Ecology
Water borne diseases, Food borne diseases, Vector Borne Diseases, Soil Transmitted Diseases, Zoonotic Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases taking into consideration the Epidemiology, Biology, Biochemistry, Microbiology and Entomology.

ESSS 609 Health Impact Assessment for Sanitation programmes
The goal of sanitation as promotion for the protection of public health. Analysis of impact of sanitation programs for health outcome. Methodologies for impact assessment for sanitation interventions
ESSS 610 Sustainable Sanitation: Social, Cultural, Behavioural and Gender Issues
Outline of the main international agreements behind the concept of sustainable development. Identification of cultural and behavioural factors that impact on sanitation practices. Gender considerations in the provision of sanitation facilities and services.
ESSS 611 Occupational Health: Health and Sanitation hazards in the workplace and home
Introduction to basics of Occupational Health. Occupational Hygiene and Safety principles for workplaces and homes. Environmental hazards in small scale and cottage industries. Common illnesses and injuries associated with various works(e.g., welding, milling of dried foods, use of vibrating machines, use of dyes, mortuary services, etc). Relevant regulations on premises. Educational programmes.
ESSS 612 Public Health Promotion for Sustainable Sanitation
IEC (Information, Education and Communication). Advocacy, empowerment and participation of individuals, communities, towns and cities. Public Laws. Identification, review and enforcement of public laws beneficial for sustainable sanitation.
ESSS 613 Technological Options for Waste Management
Review Technological options for Management of Industrial waste, Management of Institutional waste (Hospitals, Schools, Clinics, Laboratories) and Management of special hazardous waste, (radioactive, research waste, etc.).
ESSS 614 Sanitation Technologies
Sanitation systems: Pit latrines, VIP latrines, small biogas installation, cartage systems, soak away systems, composting latrines, aqua-privies, pour flush systems, septic tank. Design, operation and maintenance.
ESSS 615 Housing and Health
Public health aspects of housing: Physiological requirements, Psychological requirements, Prevention of disease transmission and Prevention of accidents.
ESSS 616 Industrial and other Applications of Waste
Composting for manure and farming, mining, land reclamation and recycling of waste for manufacture of new products.
ESSS 617 Institutional Development and Sector Management for Sanitation
Institutional Diagnosis, Health of Institution, tools for diagnosis, staff development and retention, institutional autonomy, customer orientation.
ESSS 618 Hygiene Education: Principles and Practices
Introduction of hygiene education as an instrument for learning and maintaining hygiene practices by individuals and communities. Information Education and Communication (IEC) principles and application for water and sanitation. Hygiene education in relation to enforcement of sanitary regulation as tools for behaviour change. Planning of hygiene education programme and Implementation. Methodology for assessment of impact programmes.
ESSS 614 Sustainable Financing for the Sanitation Sector
Introduction to the concept of sustainability in development of sanitation programmes. Introduction of principles of Cost Recovery, Affordability and Willingness to pay. Sources of funding (Government, Donors, NGOs, CBOs, Individuals, Professional/Social Societies). Funding arrangements and schemes: Capital expenditure: loans and grants (Government, Donors, etc); Operations and Maintenance (Communities, local authorities, etc) and other schemes. Institutional arrangements for advocacy and promotion of sustainable financing.
ESSS 616 Policy Makers Role in the Development and Promotion of Policies, Legislation and Regulation
Introduction of concept that Policy makers are prime movers of development interventions. Delineation of their roles in policy development at all levels (local, district and national). Procedures for initiation of policies and legislation. Procedure for establishment of regulations. Promotion of education of Policy makers and design of requisite and appropriate strategies for their education (conferences, seminars, workshops, dissemination of information, etc). Identification of incentives for motivation of Policy Makers to play role of advocates of sustainable sanitation. |
