Jacob Mawuko Kutu

is a lecturer and researcher of Geology specializing in structural geology, tectonics, and petrology. He holds BSc (Ghana), MSc (Ghana), and PhD (Ghana) degrees in Geology in the areas of structural geology, petrology, and ore-mineral and material resource geology.

Dr. Kutu has been teaching and researching in geology since 1999, some 12 years in the University of Ghana and elsewhere. He was appointed first as part-time lecturer at the Department of Geology (now Earth Science), University of Ghana, in 1998, while pursuing his PhD, and a full-time lecturer in 2005. He has continually taught and trained many students some of who are now lecturers and mine managers. He is actively serving on a number of committees of the University of Ghana, and on boards in the mineral industry.

Dr. Kutu teaches several geology courses both at the undergraduate and graduate levels in the University of Ghana. He has supervised ever so many undergraduates (BSc) and a number of postgraduate (MPhil) student research projects.

His current research activities

  • Structure and geology of Ghana
  • Geotectonics and lithotectonic evolution of West Africa
  • Mineral and material resources of Ghana and West Africa
  • Petrogenetic relationship between the Dahomeyide and Birimide. Research activities in these areas are ongoing and have resulted in a number of findings, publications, and exploitation activities.
In addition to university work, he has undertaken many professional activities in academia, the mineral industry in Ghana, and for the general public. He facilitated the establishment of AAPG and SPE chapters at University of Ghana, Legon.

His extension activities outside the University of Ghana include


  • membership of professional bodies: American Association of Petroleum Geologists, Ghana Institution of Geoscientists, Geological Society of Africa, and Ghana Science Association
  • Consulting Geologist for the Mineral, Material and Mining industry, and the geotechnical engineering and construction industry in Ghana; Mineral Commission technical workshops on mineral and mining laws and regulation.

In recognition of his teaching and research work and contribution to the mineral and material industry, he has been given a number of awards, notable is the first Honorary and Meritorious Citation and Award (2008/2009 Academic Year), by the University of Ghana Geology Students Association (GEOLSA). Dr. Kutu loves research collaboration.
