General Admission Requirements for Degree Programmes

SSSCE/WASSCE APPLICANTS

General Entry Requirements
To be admitted to any Degree programme, Senior High School graduates must possess:

At least credits (C6) in English, Core Mathematics and Integrated Science (for Science candidates) or Social Studies/Life Skills (for non-Science candidates) and three elective subjects in Science for candidates applying to Science or Agriculture related disciplines or three elective subjects in General Arts/Business for candidates applying to non-Science related disciplines. In addition, Science candidates should have at least a grade C6 in Social Studies and non-Science candidates should also have at least a grade C6 in Integrated Science


The required subjects for specific programmes (in calculating aggregates) are as follows:

1. Humanities (BA)
Core Mathematics, English & Social Studies
Three Electives

Economics (BA)
In addition to the requirements for humanities, applicants must have a strong quantitative background (A1 in Core Mathematics and B2 in Elective Mathematics).

2. Engineering
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Three Electives from Chemistry, Physics & Elective Mathematics

3. Science (BSc)
Biological Sciences

Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Three Electives from Biology, Chemistry, Physics

Biomathematical Sciences
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Must have credit pass in Biology plus at least a Grade B3 in Elective Mathematics with Chemistry or Physics

Mathematical Sciences
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Elective Mathematics (at least a Grade B3), with Chemistry or Physics or Biology

Physical Sciences
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Elective Mathematics (at least a Grade B2), with Chemistry and Physics

Earth Sciences
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Chemistry and Physics with either Elective Mathematics or Biology


4. Agriculture (BSc)
Core Mathematics, English & Integrated Science
Three Electives from Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics, General Agriculture/Biology, Geography/Economics

Family and Consumer Sciences
Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Sciences plus Three Electives from Chemistry, Physics, Elective Mathematics and General Agriculture

OR
Management in Living plus two of the following:
Food and Nutrition
Textiles and Clothing
General Knowledge in Art

OR
Economics and Geography and any other two electives
OR
Diploma students with B+ grade in any of the areas in Home Science/Home Economics are eligible to apply.

Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (6-year DVM)
SSSCE/WASSCE passes in:

Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science & Social Studies
Biology, Chemistry & Physics or Elective Mathematics
BSc. Degree in Animal Science, Biological or Allied Sciences
Diploma in Animal Health (Distinction) plus the minimum requirements for admission into the University of Ghana
Candidates who qualify under categories (ii) and (iii) would be admitted to level 200 of the programme.


5. Nursing
Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science (Minimum C6/D)
Three Electives from Chemistry, Physics, Biology or Elective Mathematics
OR
General Agriculture, Physics & Chemistry
OR
Three General Arts Electives
OR
Two General Arts Electives or plus Food & Nutrition
OR
Any three of the following Electives: Economics, Management in Living, Food & Nutrition, Chemistry, General Knowledge in Art and French.

6. Bachelor of Public Health**

  • Candidates with Diplomas awarded by the University of Ghana, institutions recognized by or affiliated to the University of Ghana and institutions under the Ministry of Health, shall require an FGPA of 3.25 or better/equivalent and shall attend a selection interview.
  • Diplomas awarded by institutions other than those indicated in (i) above, may be considered eligible on recommendation by a special Committee. Shortlisted candidates shall be required to sit an entrance examination and attend a selection interview.

Applicants with Diploma in Health or related sciences who satisfy the requirements for admission shall enter in Level 200.
Candidates who have taken prescribed Level 200 courses at the Diploma Level will be admitted to Level 300 and credited with such courses.

7. Pharmacy/Medicine/Dentistry
Direct admission into programmes at the Medical and Dental Schools will begin in the 2011/2012 academic year

Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science
Three Electives from Biology, Chemistry and either Physics or Elective Mathematics

8. Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Sciences
Direct admission into the Bachelor of Science in Allied Health Sciences programme
will begin in the 2011/2012 academic year at the School of Allied Health Sciences. The following options will be available.
  • Physiotherapy
  • Radiography
  • Medical Laboratory Sciences
  • Dietetics
Core Mathematics, English and Integrated Science
Three Electives from Biology, Chemistry and Physics

** WASSCE/SSSCE candidates are NOT eligible to apply.

For Foreign Applicants

1. Required subjects for Science:
English, Mathematics, Biology/Agriculture, Physics and Chemistry plus one Arts subject
Further Mathematics
(for Mathematical Science)

2. Required subjects for Arts:
English, Mathematics, Biology/Agriculture
and any three Arts subjects

3. Required subjects for Engineering:
English, Mathematics, Physics, Further Mathematics and Chemistry
plus
Biology/Agriculture or one Arts subject

Other Qualifications:
Other qualifications acceptable for consideration for admission include International Baccalaureate (IB), IGCSE, GCSE, American Grade 13 examinations and other external qualifications which have equivalences to the WASSCE/SSSCE and the GCE (A Levels).
