The Special Fund is not a substitute for the Department vote. It is intended to meet cases of research not provided for in departmental estimates.

As a general rule, the Research Fund will not be drawn on for the purpose or defraying the cost of passages.

Where the grant from the above fund is used to purchase equipment, the equipment shall be the property of the University and not of the person to whom the grant is made.

An applicant, upon the completion of a piece of research, which is financed from the Research Fund, should submit a report on the research to the Research and Conferences Committee through his or her Head of Department or Director of Institute or School. Copies must also be given to the Department and appropriate Faculty Deans. The Head of Department or the Director of Institute or School may, at his or her discretion, ask the applicant to amend the report.

Where the research, in respect of which a grant has been made, takes a year or more to complete, periodic progress reports should be submitted at six month intervals.

A member of an organization within the University which operates on earmarked grants will not be entitled to draw on the Research Fund.

Where a beneficiary of the Special Research Fund resigns or retires from the service of the University before completing the research in respect of which a grant has been made, he or she will be required to submit a final and detailed report on the state of his project to the Research and Conferences Committee, through his Head of Department or Director of Institute or School before leaving the services of the University. He or she will also be expected to send a report to the University upon the completion of the research even though he or she ceased to be in the service of the University at the time of completing such research.

Applications for research grants should have been considered by the appropriate Faculty Board or Management Board during the academic session. No applications for research shall be considered by the Committee after the last regular meeting of the session.
