JOB SUMMARY
The Infrastructure Services Division designs, implements, manages and maintains LANs, WANs, Wired and   Wireless Media (WiFi, Fibre- optics), routers/switches in order to deliver services to the university community such as network connectivity, identity management, application hosting, backup and storage services,  virtualization services, database and data warehouse support, and data center services and support. The Deputy CITO (Infrastructure) reports to the CITO and plays the role of ensuring the successful execution and maintenance of the University of Ghana’s (UoG) mission of an educational provider through development, deployment and use of appropriate IT infrastructure.
The Deputy CITO (Infrastructure) works with the UGCS team and external partners to ensure that the IT infrastructure and digital assets are working efficiently and effectively.
The Deputy CITO  (Infrastructure) oversees the following units:

  1. Network Administration
  2. System Administration
  3. Telecoms and Electricals

 

Key responsibilities include, among others to:

  • Define and implement policies, standards and procedures governing the use of IT infrastructure to support teaching, learning, research, and administration.
  • Build and manage the infrastructure development/maintenance team and ensure that the team maintains existing and future network and telecommunication infrastructure.
  • Ensure the IT Infrastructure team has clear goals and direction and a culture of service excellence.
  • Develop and lead project teams focused on redesigning core IT infrastructure.
  • Identify and evaluate new technology infrastructure and their appropriate application and potential impact on teaching, learning, research and administration.
  • Evaluate cost/benefit of improvement opportunities and set development priorities.
  • In conjunction with team leaders, the Deputy CITO  Infrastructure is responsible for managing technology vendor relationships in a manner that ensures cost-effective and timely procurement of hardware, software, and services.
  • Perform other duties as required in support of the IT functions or assigned by the CITO.

 

 

QUALIFICATION/EXPERIENCE
Minimum Education - a Master’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, Information Systems or related discipline.  Having any of the following professional certifications (Microsoft Certified System Engineer (MCSE), and/or Cisco Certified Network Engineer (CCNE) would be an added advantage.


Knowledge & Experience

  • 10-12 years’ experience working in the IT industry with a minimum of 6 years progressive management experience overseeing and leading IT infrastructure development teams and strategic initiatives.
  • Experience in managing an IT division within a large organization in the public or private sector.
  • Experience in managing external vendor relationships.
  • A broad knowledge of trends and future directions of IT and its application in higher education.
  • Excellent understanding of project management principles.
  • Ability to communicate concepts and processes clearly and effectively in oral and written form.
  • Demonstrate strong customer service skills.
  • Ability to determine resources requirements, develop an annual financial budget sufficient to cover the cost of administration, training, technical support, supervision, procurement, system upgrades and replacement.
