Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidate for the following position:

Position title:  Research Development Officer

Not lower than Assistant Registrar

Reports to:
Dual reporting: Day-to-day management reporting to Dean of Faculty/ Director of Institute. Functional reporting and accountability to Pro-VC (ORID)

Support staff as may be assigned

1. Primary Responsibility
The primary responsibility of the Research Development Officer is to build the portfolio of funded research projects in assigned Faculty/Institute, contribute to the overall faculty research productivity and assist in generating research funds. Working as part of the research support team of the Office for Research, Innovation and Development (ORID), the Research Development Officer’s role will span identification of research funding opportunities, proposal development, proposal submission, tracking of the submission up to contract award.

2. Specific responsibilities

i. Identify key donor agencies funding research in the range of disciplines within his/her assigned Faculty/Institute and maintain an up-to date database of each donor agency’s areas of focus, policies and requirements;
ii. Ensure that UG is duly registered with the key donors as necessary;
iii. Take lead role in Faculty fund-raising to support research activities;
iv. Routinely search for calls for proposals and other research funding opportunities and disseminate information to appropriate faculty;
v. Encourage and support faculty members and faculty teams to develop research proposals;
vi. Take lead role in organizing training programmes that provide faculty members with the necessary capacity for producing winning proposal (e.g., proposal writing training, project budgeting etc.);
vii. Coordinate proposal writing and submission within the Faculty/Institute;
viii. Ensure that each proposal emanating from the Faculty/Institute is of high quality, follows UG’s laid down procedures and responds to target donor’s requirements;
ix. Ensure that completed proposals are submitted in a timely manner;
x. Maintain contact with donors and track submissions until contract is awarded;
xi. Keep record of all proposals submitted and numbers successful, ensure that this information is captured in the central UG research database, compile lessons learned and best practice and disseminate widely to faculty members;
xii. Prepare and submit regular half-yearly reports on proposal submissions to the Pro-VC (ORID) and the Dean of Faculty/Director of Institute;
xiii. Perform any other duties that may be assigned to him/her by the Pro-VC (ORID).

3. Qualification & Experience

i. A minimum of MPhil in a relevant discipline and a minimum of five (5) years relevant work experience;
ii. Good track record of successful grant and technical writing;
iii. Strong computer literacy is essential;
iv. Familiarity with aid agencies/donor procedures will be a clear advantage.

4. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Required
i. Results oriented person, able to set targets and achieve set targets;
ii. Ability to influence others to obtain results;
iii. Ability to work with minimal supervision;
iv. Good interpersonal skills and an excellent team player;
v. Strong verbal and written communication skills;
vi. Demonstrate a high degree of professionalism.

5. Performance Indicators, Progression and Nomenclature

Performance of the position shall be measured by Faculty output in terms of numbers of proposal submitted, number of winning proposals and demonstrated increase in portfolio of funded research in the assigned Faculty/Institute.
Depending on the sources of funds secured, the position would attract performance related bonuses.
Promotion of Research Development Officers shall follow the requirements for promotion of administrative/professional staff as found in the University of Ghana Statutes.
