Ghana Field School 2010 (June-July Vacation Programme)
The University of Ghana (UG) presents the first edition of its Ghana Field School from 29th May to 31st July 2010.
This programme will enhance the independence and self-confidence of participants as well as provide them with a new perspective on life. For those who wish to broaden their mind and experience, the cultural benefits of studying in Ghana will provide the opportunity to interact with Ghanaians and people from other parts of the world. Participants will get to know Accra as well as travel to different parts of Ghana. They will have a remarkable time basking in the warm and pleasant Ghanaian sun and enjoy the beautiful beaches on Ghana’s coast.
The Ghana Field School is an intensive residential study programme designed to create a learning experience in the culture and heritage of Ghana. It will offer interested individuals the option of gaining either six or twelve credits by taking a course (four weeks long) or two courses (eight weeks long) respectively, in the School of Performing Arts and/or the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies. The school is open to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as non-students.
Participants can visit many tourist attractions such as the numerous waterfalls, mountains, the canopy walk and the forest reserves in Ghana and some of the neighbouring West African countries in their free time.
COURSES
ARCH 417/610 (undergraduate and graduate levels) Ethnographic Field Methods and Techniques:
This will expose students to rural and urban life in a developing country setting while introducing them to ethnographic and other forms of research. There will be 7 days of lectures in Accra and 19 days in field (Dept. of Archaeology and Heritage Studies)
DANC 321** Performing Arts in Traditional African Cultures:
This course is designed to give students a clear understanding of the performing arts (embracing Dance, Music and Theatre Arts) in traditional African cultures. There will be 28 days (60 hours) of lectures/demonstration/practicum (School of Performing Arts)
ARCH 405/603 (undergraduate and graduate levels) Archaeological Field Methods and Techniques:
This involves archaeological fieldwork combined with lectures and seminars at an ancient ironworking site at Adume-Atimpoku in the Eastern Region. There will be 7 days of lecture in Accra; 19 days in field (Dept. of Archaeology and Heritage Studies)

Structure of the Programme
The duration of the School is a minimum of four weeks and a maximum of nine weeks. It comprises lectures, fieldwork, demonstrations, practicum and an evaluation.
Eligibility
Undergraduate Applicants: Minimum of one year tertiary education with a CGPA of at least 2.50.
Graduate Applicants: Minimum of one year graduate study with a pass in all courses taken.
Non-Students: Two Letters of reference (Academic reference from last institution attended and a personal reference).
Cancellation of Courses:
A course will run only if at least 20 people sign up. If a course is cancelled, applicants will be notified immediately via e-mail and a full refund of the fees paid will be made.

PROGRAMME POLICIES
There will be no refund of programme fees after 29th May 2010 under any circumstances.
Participants who withdraw from the programme after it has begun are fully responsible for any costs (including airfare) associated with returning to their place of origin. No refund will be granted if a student is asked to leave the programme due to disciplinary problems such as excessive alcohol use, drug use, behaviour endangering the group or the individual, or refusing to comply with safety and security measures as determined by the programme directors.

MODE OF APPLICATION
The deadlines for receipt of all applications and supporting documents are as follows:

Enrolment is limited, so an early application is encouraged. Information on the Field School will be sent to successful applicants by 20th April, 2010 via e-mail.
TRAVEL OPPORTUNITIES
The International Programmes Office, in collaboration with a tour agent, will organize excursions within Ghana, as well as to neighbouring countries during the period. Tour details will be communicated to interested participants. These tours come at an extra cost to participants. Registration and enquiries should be channeled to the International Programmes Office, UG.
