Background:
Technological advancement in biosciences has made it possible to understand the role of genes and amino acids in living organisms. The application of computer science, mathematics and molecular biology to analyse and manage biological information is termed
BIOINFORMATICS. Some of its applications include identification of important genes, design of diagnostic assays, drug design, pharmacogenomics, studying genetic diversity and epidemiology among others.
Course Objective:
This five day course is meant to introduce and enhance the theoretical knowledge in Bioinformatics and provide hands-on training.
Target Groups:
Researchers in the Biosciences, Medical & Pharmaceutical Sciences, (Postgraduate Students are eligible to apply).
Entry Requirements:
Participants should have basic practical knowledge in computing and office applications. They should also be able to browse the internet.

- Principles of Bioinformatics
- Molecular Structure of the gene
- DNA & RNA Structure
- PCR & Primer Design
- Gene Sequencing
- Gene Databases
- Submission and retrieval of
- sequences
- Sequence alignment &
- Bootstrapping
- Distance Estimation & Tree Building
- Translation of Genes
- Amino Acid Analysis
- Homology Modelling
Dates:
The course will be organised twice in 2009 on the following dates:
August 24th-28th, 2009 November 23rd-27th, 2009
Time: 8:30am -4:30pm daily
Fees: GH¢ 270.00
Non-Residential
